THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar. Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive, please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.
Director Notes:
We wanted to remind the families that if you hear something from your son/daughter that concerns you, please let your student’s teacher know: Mrs. Shelton for First-Year students, Dr. Manning for Second-Year students, and Mrs. Garnier for third —and fourth-year students. We have had several conversations with the students about who to go to in the dorms and during the day. It can take some time to get everyone to understand where to go for assistance.
We have sign-up sheets for Homecoming week and the upcoming Rec leagues. There are lots of things for students to sign up for.
First-Year Students:
University Foundations: Joni Shelton
We have had a busy week. We have continued with daily reminders for checking UCM email accounts regularly and getting used to using Brightspace. We are also working through Chapter 1 or the Step by Step textbook “Getting Started in College”. On Tuesday, we visited the Smiser Alumni Center in the Union to learn more about the UCM Alumni from Day One program and the Traditions Keepers Memory book activity, which includes experiences, notable sights, and a scavenger hunt here on the UCM campus. On Thursday, Beth Rutt, from the UCM Student Activities and the Student Rec Center, came to the class and shared the wide variety of activities available for students to participate in on campus. Students have discovered that there is always something to do here at UCM.
They also had a visit from Beth Rutt from the Student Activities Office.
Individual Relationships and Health: Sandra Swainston
This week, we have talked about clearly communicating and what the fallout can be when we aren’t clear. We also addressed gossip and how it can be hurtful and cause fights that don’t need to happen. We have had many interesting discussions brought up while learning open communication channels. Very proud of the respect they are showing to each other.
Learning about gossiping…
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
This week we learned how to format a paper in Google Docs. Students wrote an autobiographical paragraph following common college paper formatting guidelines. We also spent some time getting caught up on some assignments.
A bit of homework time on Wednesday afternoon… Great job!
Career Exploration: Gary Manning
This week in class, we continue to discuss goals and have realistic goals. The students continue to research different careers and how those careers may relate to what they are interested in. We discuss the different aspects of a career. For example, if you want to go into education, what are the different jobs you can do in education: teach, paraprofessional, pre-school, day care, coach, etc.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
We continue to discuss the students' SMART goals for the semester. Within that discussion, the students are figuring out how to accomplish their goals. Are there resources they need to utilize to accomplish the goals? How can they be independent and responsible to accomplish the goals? What are the positive and negative consequences as you make choices to accomplish these goals? Unfortunately, sometimes we have to fail at our goals at first and learn from our failures to be able to accomplish our goals in the future.
Internship I: Gary Manning
Internships are going very well. Supervisors are very pleased with the students' work ethic and soft skills. However, we still need to work on not having their cell phones out during internship times. As for hard skills, we are still working on them. Hard skills are harder to learn and take time. Some of the hard skills that students are learning are to operate equipment, use technology, and provide customer service.
Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs.Shelton
This week, students learned knife safety and a wide variety of knife cuts. Students then practiced knife safety and demonstrated the various cuts using Play-Doh. Students also started our cooking labs by planning for and then making Air Fryer Quesadillas. We will be cooking, planning, and preparing for cooking labs on Wednesday, with half of the class cooking on Friday and the other half on Monday.
Third-Year Students:
Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier
We have officially begun our life design section. This week, students learned about balancing work, play, health, and relationships. They are currently evaluating their own life balance, and I am looking forward to seeing the results.
Internship III: Lisa Garnier
Students are enjoying their internships and doing well.
Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier
Plato: Joni Shelton
Students continue to work on these online Math, Reading, and Writing courses. On Fridays, students are notified if they have more minutes to complete to meet the 60 required each week in each subject over the weekend. Our Plato Challenges start on Mondays and are to be completed by Sunday.
