THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

Second-, Third-, and fourth-year students will take their finals December 8th through the 12th.  These parents will want to get with their students to see when their last Final and last scheduled time to work in their internships is.  We like for students to leave after their last final/internship so that the hall is quieter for the students that are still studying…

Move-Out procedures: Students will need to sign up for a check out time soon after they get back from Thanksgiving break.  We’ve asked students and their families to see what a good time would be for them.  Students should have their rooms cleaned, according to the check out sheet, before their checkout time.  Then leave fairly soon after they have been properly checked out.  If students leave without being checked out, there can be a fine.  Staff and mentors will be reminding students of the procedure during the week.  There is a new scan system that we are using that is outside of Chloe’s dorm door.  Also, staff has one as well.

Move-In Procedures in January: On Sunday, January 11th, the dorms will open back up.  There won’t be study hall on this Sunday.  Please remind the students to bring any chargers and electronics back with them.  We’ve had times where the students forget these important things…  Also, they may want/need some new folders for the semester, please get one red folder for their new schedule and items.

Some students getting ready for the holidays, and dressed alike…

First-Year Students:

Have all left campus and are enjoying a well-deserved rest. We'll see you in January.

Learning Strategies: Joni Shelton

The students finished up their Final last Thursday and then worked on finishing up their “My Story” paper.

Individual Relationships and Health:  Sandra Swainston

This semester has flown by!  We are reviewing for the Final on Friday.  It is an open-note test, and we went over the notes together in class.  I will allow students to take the test three times to improve their scores if they choose.  Thank you for sharing your scholars with me this semester.  They have taught me as much as I hope they learned from me.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

Students viewed their iMovies in class, and they were very good! The rest of the week was spent catching up on PLATO and studying for finals. I know they are all looking forward to the winter break.

Career Exploration: Gary Manning

This was our last week with the students.  We had a workday to provide support on their resumes to help them complete and finalize them before submitting them to their families for review.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

We also started preparing to leave campus next week for the semester break.  This process can be stressful for the students.  We talked over the break, do not get too lazy and continue to do your own laundry, work a part-time job, volunteer within your community, help your parents around the house.

Internship I: Gary Manning

The students are doing their mock interviews this week and next week.  The students will also be finishing their internships over the next couple of days.

Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs.Shelton

Worked on finishing up projects.

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier

We conducted an end-of-semester wrap-up, reviewing the information covered in the "Design Your Life" book. We discussed what we learned this semester and how they could continue to apply those lessons next semester and throughout their lives.

Internship III: Lisa Garnier

Students are wrapping up their internships this week. It has been a good semester, and I think they all learned a lot.

Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier

Our last class of the semester was a fun one! We made holiday sweet treats that included homemade caramels, peppermint fudge, Christmas fudge, and chocolate peanut butter no-bake cookies.

Fourth-Year Students:

Senior Portfolio I:

Our last class was a review of the final documents for the portfolio, and we look forward to a successful continuation next semester.

Internship:

Much was learned in internships this semester!

Plato: Joni Shelton

The students finished up Plato for the semester.  They will have more next semester.

THRIVE/Mentor Activities:

THRIVE Awards:

Lots of awards are going on, and we had a light supper for the students.

The last mentor activity was a study time last Friday night.  We had three that signed up…

Important upcoming dates:

Next Mentor Activity:

In the Spring, we will return.

UCM Athletics:

Football, Soccer, and Volleyball are finishing up....  The games are on your son/daughter’s THRIVE Activities Calendar on Google.
