THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive, please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

We wanted to remind the families that if you hear something from your son/daughter that concerns you, please let your student’s teacher know: Mrs. Shelton for First-Year students, Dr. Manning for Second-Year students, and Mrs. Garnier for third —and fourth-year students. We have had several conversations with the students about who to go to in the dorms and during the day. It can take some time to get everyone to understand where to go for assistance.

Rec Leagues are starting up soon. We had enough students for co-rec softball leagues, but unfortunately, we didn’t have enough teams to form a league this semester. But we do have more leagues coming up that are on the wall, and we will have the Homecoming sign-up sheets in the lobby soon. There are lots of things for students to sign up for.

First-Year Students:

University Foundations: Joni Shelton

This week, students visited the Learning Commons to learn how to access their tutoring sessions. Learning Commons staff also presented some study skills strategies to our students. In class we also finished up our introduction to the course, toured campus to find the Communications classrooms, which started this week, and started our 1st Chapter in the Step by Step textbook about starting out as a college student. We continue to learn about resources and activities available to students on the UCM campus.

Individual Relationships and Health:  Sandra Swainston

This week, we had a guest speaker from the Health Center come in and discuss services available on campus and how to access them. The students had great questions! We are also working on types of listening: reflective, active, listening blocks, and nonverbal communication. There will be two assignments due Friday: the sleep log and the Listening activity.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

We spent this week learning about email safety—recognizing scams, identifying fake emails that could be scams, and reporting these types of emails. We also learned about internet safety on social media platforms and in online gaming. Finally, we spent one class period discussing cyberbullying and face-to-face bullying. Students learned what bullying is and its repercussions.

Career Exploration: Gary Manning - We started to discuss goals and what the student may be interested in.  The students are working on the Missouri Connection.  The first assignment in Missouri Connect was an interest profile.  This gives the students and THRIVE staff an idea on what the student is interested in and what the student may want to pursue in classes.

The students are working on three SMART goals for the semester.  These goals can be academic, personal, or internship-related.  As we progress through the semester, the student and I will discuss these goals to see how they are progressing on the goals.

Some students in PE this week:

Second-Year Students:

2nd, 3rd, and 4th-year students had a review session from Care To Act…

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

The first part of the book discusses different paradigms and relationships.  We discussed that not everyone is the same, and proper communication is very important when you are having a conversation with your supervisors, instructors, and family.

Internship I: Gary Manning

We are discussing/practicing professional development/skills during class.  Some of those skills include professional emails, dress, appropriate body language, and communication.  Further, we are discussing personal/sick days for a job/internship.  During the semester the students have four personal days they can use at their internship.  We have this in place because we want the students to have a realistic view of a job.

Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs.Shelton

This week, we discussed cooking terms, techniques, and tools. Next week, we will focus on knife skills and safety.

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier

This week, we began our Design Your Life curriculum. We discussed how we plan for our futures and that we don’t always stay on the same path throughout our lives. Students also attended a Care-to-Act presentation on mental wellness.

Internship III: Lisa Garnier

The first week of internships is under our belts. So far, they are going well!

Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier

This week, we discussed healthy snacking and the health pitfalls of oversnacking and snacking on unhealthy foods like ice cream, potato chips, candy, etc. Instead, we learned that nuts, fruits, raw vegetables, avocado, and yogurt are healthier choices. Then, we made homemade protein bars in our food lab. They were delicious!

Plato: Joni Shelton

Students have completed the 1st two weeks on Plato. Students are required to complete 60 minutes of Math, 60 minutes of Reading, and 60 minutes of Language Arts each week. Some students discovered this week that the previous week's incomplete hours do not disappear; they carry over to the next week, increasing the amount of time the student has to complete the following week. Students also have to attend Study Hall Plus to make up hours. One student shared today with his classmates how tiring that was. He encouraged his classmates to get the minutes done each week and not have to catch up the next week.
