First-Year Students:
University Foundations:
Some students are still working on managing their time wisely while many have figured it out. Students have
nightly homework in University Foundations. Learning to manage everything is a process. We are discussing
technology this week, passwords, social media, and the resources available to all of us. Students arranged their
own study groups and met to study for the test that was Friday. Students should continue to check
www.edmodo.com for reminders on homework. Students took their test on Friday in the Office of Accessibility.
All students arrange a time that best fits their individual schedule. Any student that does not prearrange a
testing time is required to take the test in the classroom with no accommodations. So this is an essential step to
being self-reliant.

Daily & Independent Living Skills:
For DILS for Personal Safety, the students completed wallet cards to carry in the wallet that has their
personal information regarding themselves ex: preferred hospital, medical information, contact inform-
ation in case of emergency. We have also been learning about positive relationships. Learning about
what constitutes a best friend, a casual friend, an acquaintance. They have also been learning about
the difference between a positive relationship with the opposite sex, signs of a negative relationship,
signs of a positive partner.

Relationships 101:
Students had an assignment to turn in. This week’s topic was dating. Things discussed were, cheap places to go for a date, how to start dating, why people date and many other topics related to dating. We even discussed how to ask someone out on a date and how to break up with someone. We talked about our values and how they act as a guide for your behavior and treatment of others.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I:7 Habits - We discussed Paradigms - A paradigm is a way you see something,
your point of view, a frame of reference, or belief. We have paradigms about ourselves, of others, life,
the world and others have paradigm about us. Within that framework, we are discussing principles.
- Next week we will be discussing pages 31 - 46 in the 7 Habits book and this is working with a personal
bank account (PBA)
Internship I: Students are learning a lot in their different internships - taking initiative, responsibility, com-
munication skills, and accountability. Students are doing daily internship logs - this is what day they
work, how many hours they worked and write complete sentences/paragraphs on what they did during
their internship that day.

- Professional Development Plan - This plan is an ongoing work in progress. The students started off
by answering five questions, we have expanded their thoughts on those five questions and we continue
to expand on those five questions. It is interesting to see how the students' progress during this process.

PLATO:
Last week no one was required to attend a mandatory study hall due to lack of plato hours. Some students
received an emailed warning about low hours, but for the most part, everyone did a good job. Students are
learning they can work on plato anywhere anytime. They are learning to move activities around on the schedule
to best suit each person’s time. A few students are understanding the meaning of dovetailing they discovered
they can work on plato or another assignment while their laundry is washing.

I'll plan on setting this up next year also.

This year THRIVE is a sponsor for the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City’s Step up for
Down Syndrome. We will be putting together a team of 10 students that will go to Arrowhead Stadium to
walk for this event, held on October 20th from 10 am to 2 pm. We are excited that we are able to do this
and see our students show support. A Google Form was sent out last Friday morning for students that
want to sign up for the team. There are limited spots available for this activity.
