Week 4/8

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

First-Year Students:

Workplace & Community Skills:

The students were continuing to work on finalizing their resumes, thank you letters and start on their cover letters for their internships.

Learning Strategies:

Monday Mrs. Southard was gone to a conference and Dr. Manning took over.  Students were to turn in Chapter 7 word search and begin working on Chapter 7 vocabulary and questions at the end of the chapter. The way the textbook is set up makes it difficult to find answers. So students worked together discussing the assignments. Wednesday students were asked to attend Ashley Cain’s speech over in the Union.  Friday topics covered was what are some of the differences in college textbooks and different strategies of reading a textbook.

Personal Math:

Students in Personal Math Class have been learning how to read an advertisement for a job. While reading a job advertisement they were taught how to look for the following:
Yearly Salary or Hourly Wage
How many hours will they work a week
Is the job close to home
Will they need any skills
Do they need more education?

Students have also been learning how to calculate a Yearly Salary then practicing then skill learning independently. They have also been learning how to calculate a monthly and weekly salary. Once skill was learned the students were to work independently filling out a monthly salary and weekly salary chart.

Thursday 4/11/19 students will be learning how to fill out a time card. Through practice and apply the students will be calculating a weekly time card. Students will also be learning how to calculate overtime.

Next Tuesday 4/16/19 the students will be learning about a commission, and what if you earn a salary plus commission?
On Thursday 4/19/19 the students will be preparing for an exam over lessons taught in regard to Yearly Salary, Weekly Salary, time cards, overtime, monthly salary, hourly wage, the difference between employer and employee.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II:

This week we did a lot of reviewing of discussions on self-responsibility, self-advocacy, making decisions, choices on decisions and on budgeting.  I was very impressed on how much the students have remembered from our previous discussions and from our book study on 7 Habits book.

The students attended a presentation on the "Pursuit Of Happiness" that was in collaboration with the Social Work department here at UCM.  One of our students gave a speech on her "Pursuit of Happiness."

Internship II:

Internship II - All students survived their mock interviews at the Career Service Center.  The students actually told me it was not as bad as they thought it was going to be. The students are doing well at their internships and getting ready for the end of the semester.  However, they still have to finish strong. The students will have an end of the year interview and a 4-5 page reflection paper on their internship.

PLATO:

Students had the final assessment for this school year. Again students were expected to do their best and take their time. Some students did and some did not. Time spent on assessments is added and counted toward their total time required for the week.

Study Time:

Students are still doing great at utilizing the classroom to study.  Great job everyone. Here is a picture of one instance.

THRIVE Activities:

This weekend the students were able to do a Tie Dye event with the Student CEC group on campus.  Claire was able to coordinate with them for this activity. Below are some pictures of our students during and after the event.

Important upcoming dates:

THRIVE Scholarships-
This is just a reminder that THRIVE Scholarships are available for the next school year.  So for families of 2020 need to get online to fill out the applications. They are due April 15th.  We’ve sent out some emails over the last few weeks. You may go to the following link and search for THRIVE.  Then you should see two scholarships that are available. You’ll need to fill out the FAFSA, also. We still have a few families that haven’t applied.

Then click Apply Now.

Instructions for the end of the Year:
First-Year Students will take finals during Finals week.  This will mean that they will be here until the week of May 6-10th.  Each student will have different elective final times. So you’ll want to get with your students the week of the 22nd to find out when their last final is.  They will be required to stay until the day of the last final. I’ll send check out information as soon as I receive it. All rooms will need to be cleared and cleaned before they leave.

Second-Year students will have finals during the week of May 6-10th.  They will be required to stay until the day of their last final.  We ask that the students let Dr. Manning/Mr. Brunkhorst know when they are leaving the dorms.  We realize some students may leave early and then come back the day of graduation. I’ll send out checkout information as I get it.

Graduation items: Yes, I’ll be getting items and dates put together over the next month for our THRIVE graduates and families.  The Commencement date is May 11th from 10-12. We’ll then have a THRIVE Reception and presentation of THRIVE Certificates of Success to the new Graduates, from 12:30 - 3:30.  This is an exciting time and Mr. Brunkhorst will be sending out emails to 2nd-year students and their families in the coming weeks to start getting a count of how many will be attending.  I’ll have more information I’ll email 2nd-year families closer to the date.

Athletics to watch:  Men’s and Women’s Baseball, Softball, Bowling,

In addition, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics:
  • We had enough students to have a Spring Softball team.  I’ll keep you updated on the dates of the games.
  • The students can also look to their Spring Student Activities calendar that was left for them the first week.  We also have copies in the THRIVE Classroom.
