First-Year Students:

University Foundations & Relationships 101: Debra Southard

Hello, Welcome to THRIVE. I received my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Central Missouri in 2003. I also earned my Bachelor of Science in Education from UCM. I have lived in Warrensburg for over 40 years. I have taught Family and Consumer Science for 25 years. This is my third year with the THRIVE program. I teach primarily first-year THRIVE students. I am the administrator of PLATO, an online classroom program that all students will work on. I meet regularly with the first-year students to help with organization skills, class assignments and any other concerns they might have. The first semester I am teaching the University of Foundations, a class that focuses on what it is like to attend college, behavior expectations and how to study for homework and test. On Friday’s I teach a Relationship course. Some of the topics include friendships, red flags in relationships, how to start dating, making good choices and getting along with others. I also am in contact with every student’s professor outside of thrive. I make sure our students are attending classes and turning in all their work to the best of their ability.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I & Internship I: Gary Manning

Internship - The students are all set up on their internships and some of them have started already.  Everyone will be started by Thursday of this week. Their supervisors are looking forward to having the students at their organizations.  The internships will be a great learning experience for the students. The students may get frustrated at times with their internships but that is part of the process.

Transition - We will be starting our book study this week.  The book is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey.  We will utilize this book throughout the semester. We will also be discussing professional communication skills.  The students hopefully will use these skills in class, at their internships, during meetings, in the dorms and when they are talking to individuals.

THRIVE Activities:

Mentor Activities: Downtown walk and the Farmer’s Market.
At this time it’s been raining in Warrensburg, so we’ll see if they are able to do their walk downtown today or Sunday.  Here are some pictures from the movie Friday night and the Farmer’s Market on Saturday. The mentors had the students call the Safe Team to bring them back to the dorm.  Great Job Mentors!! For more pictures please join our THRIVE Facebook page.

Important upcoming dates:

This year THRIVE is a sponsor for the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City’s Step up for Down Syndrome.  We will be putting together a team of 10 students that will go to Arrowhead Stadium to walk for this event, held on October 26th from 10 am to 2 pm.  We are excited that we are able to do this and see our students show support.

Family Day is September 28th.  We will have a THRIVE activity that weekend along with activities across campus.  I’ll be updating as we know more. Unfortunately, I have a nephew getting married in Colorado so you will have to enjoy your time on campus without me.
The students can also try out for the Talent show a few weeks prior for a chance to be in the Talent show.   Here is a link to the events that they had last year. They are in the process of getting this year’s events scheduled but should give you an idea.

Homecoming Weekend is October 12th  Put it on your calendars.  The students will be able to participate in several activities.  We normally have a float that the students help with and the students walk in the parade.
