THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.
THRIVE had its Fall Open House on Monday. We had 14 families and a district come to either our morning or afternoon event. The first-year students and also the second-year students (that didn’t have their internship or a class) were in attendance. THRIVE Staff will be gearing up for next Fall’s interviews that will take place next semester.
First-Year Students:
University Foundations: Debra Southard
Students turned in their Step by Step book and got the Skills for Success textbook. The first textbook focused on college expectations which this book is more about students self-reflection. Everyone wrote a short paragraph explaining their definition of success and submitted it during class. Students uploaded Chapter 1 to their computers in Tech class and were assigned the first part of Chapter one to read. Each student was asked to recite three things they are proud of. We watched Susan Boyle, a singer that got her start on America's Got Talent. She provided inspiration for us.
Daily & Independent Living Skills: Lisa Garnier
We spent the week learning about resumes and why they are important. Students learned the basic sections of a resume and what information should go into those sections. We talked about the importance of using keywords from job postings and tailoring each resume to the specific job being applied for.
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
Students presented PowerPoints about themselves to the class and did very well. We also began talking about comparison shopping for a tech item like a cell phone, computer, gaming system, smart TV, etc. They will be learning to use a table to present information on two different brands of a tech item they might like to have.
Relationships 101: Debra Southard
We talked about the importance of forgiving yourself and keep trying and doing your best. Different kinds of love and how that word is overused. The definition of infatuation. Also discussed was harassment.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
We are have been working on personal “Mission Statements” in class. The students are thinking about what inspires them, what are their goals, what can they accomplish and hope to accomplish, and many other questions that may help them write a mission statement.
We are getting ready to start discussion Habit 3 “ Put First Things First”. The students had to read the habit and then write a summary of the habit. We will start our class discussion next week on this habit.
Internship I: Gary Manning
The students' internships are going well. The students have had to make some adjustments with their internships due to COVID and to learn new skills. This helps individuals also learn about flexibility and making adjustments in life.
We are also discussing what internships the students may want to have next semester. Usually, we want the students to have a different internship experience. However, some students stay at their current location and start learning new skills in that location.
Plato: Debra Southard
GREAT NEWS!!! All first-year students for the first time this semester so far completed their plato on time. All students had new assessments. Students were reminded to take their time on the assessments. Assessments create prescriptions for the rest of the month. If a student rushes through the assessment then it will create questions that may be difficult for the student to answer the rest of the month.
THRIVE Activities:
Mentor Activities: Goin Downtown with Kim-
This past Saturday, Abbie led our students in making a pancake breakfast. Here are some of the pictures.
A little fun between students cooking their pancakes and cleanup…
Michael was this week’s 2nd-year assistant. He helped with the shopping and assisted in the morning activities.
Great Job Everyone!! For more pictures please join our THRIVE Facebook and/or Instagram pages.
