First-Year Students:

Director Notes:

With two breaks coming up I wanted to give first-year families some information about leaving.

For Thanksgiving break, the students will need to be out of the dorms by 6 pm.  They should take their electronics with them when they leave with chargers.  They should’ve seen a document on their door last Thursday/Friday with instructions and they need to fill this out and leave it taped to their door when they leave.  Here are the items that they will need to do:

  1. Empty all trash & recyclables to the appropriate place

  2. Get any food that’s open out of their room.

  3. Turn off any alarms that they may have in their rooms

  4. Turn off lights

  5. Close and lock the bathroom door and room door.

  6. Remove from the room all perishable items (pumpkins, fruit, open food)

  7. It’s a good time to take home any summer items.

For Winter Break:

First-year students leave one week earlier than the rest of the students.  First-year students will need to be out of the dorms on December 4th, by 6 pm.  Their finals will be the week of November 30th - December 4th.  They will get a check-off sheet that will instruct them on what they need to have done before they leave and it generally needs to be checked off by an RA.  Here is a sample list, I’ll make sure the students have the updated list the week they get back from Thanksgiving.

  1. All garbage from the room disposed of in the dumpster.

  2. Room free of any other garbage swept, and cleaned bathroom, also.

  3. Clear the floor of all items not belonging there.

  4. Unplug everything in their room, including power strips and extension cords

  5. Unplug and leave the refrigerator open, placing a towel at the bottom of the refrigerator to catch any moisture.

  6. Take home all perishable food items

  7. Clean and store any dining ware

  8. Close all windows and close all blinds.

This will give you some ideas on what will be needed during these times.

Daily & Independent Living Skills:  Lisa Garnier

This week was spent working on and talking about communicating in the workplace and appropriate workplace behaviors. I’ve been testing out a new, interactive presentation technology called Nearpod. Students sign in to Nearpod with a code that links directly to my slide presentations. Throughout the presentation, there are questions, quizzes, bulletin boards, and so forth that the kids respond to via their computers. As the instructor, I can monitor how well they understand the material based on their immediate responses. The students love it and so do I!

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

We are spending all our Tech time this week and next week working on iMovie trailers. Students are working with a partner to create their own, unique movie trailers using the iMovie app on their iPads. This is always a fun and educational way to end our semester in Technology Literacy.

For Winter Break:

Second-year students have finals the week of December 7th - December 11th.  Second-year students will need to be out of the dorms on December 11th, by 6 pm.

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

We are finishing the 7 Habits book over the next week.  We have been discussing a lot about communication skills and how we should listen to other perspectives before we make judgments.  Within these discussions, we talk about five poor listening skills and how we can improve our listening skills.

The students are reviewing and have a study guide for the end of the semester final.  We will continue to review the materials over the next couple of weeks in class but the students need to study outside of class time too.  That final will be December 8th (8:00 - 10:00).

Internship I: Gary Manning

The students are in the process of finishing up their internships this semester.  Each student will finish up on different days.  This will depend on when the student is leaving campus for the semester break and on their particular internship.  The expectation is that the students work during finals week if their particular internship is still open.  Some locations will be closing down over the next couple of weeks for semester break.

The student's final for this class is a mock interview.  The mock interview will be during finals week.  The interview usually takes about 30 - 45 minutes and we want the interview to be as realistic as possible.  For example, the students need to arrive 10 -5 minutes early before the interview starts, dress appropriately, be prepared for the questions, and use good communication skills (body language, professional communication).

A little Archery practice?

The students did another great job last week.  Keep up the excellent work.

THRIVE Activities:

Great Job Everyone!!  For more pictures please join our THRIVE Facebook and/or Instagram pages.

Important upcoming dates:

Thanksgiving Move-out:  Just a reminder that the students need to be out of the dorms by 6 pm this Friday for Thanksgiving Break.  They have a note on their door that explains what they need to have done and a checklist.  Then the dorms will open back up on Sunday the 29th at noon.

Next Mentor Activity:  The last Mentor Activity will be an activity by Kim…

End of Semester Party: for students will be on December 3rd from 5-7.  There will be no study hall that night.

Spring Semester: will start back up on Monday, January 11th.  The teachers plan on bringing the students by their class areas before they leave for break and will also remind them when they get back.  Classes are in the process of being enrolled and most students should be able to look on their MyCentral to see what they have for the semester.

Spring Move-in: will be on January 10th and they will open at noon.
