THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar
It’s been a cold and busy week. We’ve discussed cold-weather gear with our students. As we have had some come in with slippers and short-sleeve shirts. If you talk to your student you might make sure they realize it’s going to be cold over the next week or so. Mrs. Southard is talking to the first-year students now about dressing in layers to keep warm. We hope that all of our families are doing well and enjoying some time at home. Enjoy this week’s blog.
First-Year Students:
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
Students shared their job shadowing experiences. Ethics was the topic this week. Several scenarios were discussed and how to handle each. Students were to write thank you letters to the place they did their first job shadowing. Also due this week was a neatly typed page about their experiences at their job shadowing. Students are always encouraged to use their resources available to get help writing their papers.

Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard):
Monday campus did not open until 10:00 due to the weather. Wednesday we took notes on Chapter 2. Students had several assignments to work on including reading chapter two. Wednesday Mrs. Southard discussed a poster project and what it should include and look like. Friday students were reminded to study for the upcoming test and we worked on posters.
Some pictures from our morning class.
Personal Math- (Mrs. Garnier):
This was a somewhat light week in math. The students completed their Salary-Based Budget project and revised their “Budgeting with Roommates” group assignment. We also reviewed for the test over Unit 1 on budgeting, pay stubs, W-2, and W-4 forms. The test is on Blackboard and must be completed by class time on Tuesday the 16th.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning):
This week the students had to start paying their bills on our monthly budget project. The students thought they had a lot of money when they were paid. Then when they had to pay their monthly bills; they had to start making choices on how much they should spend on entertainment, or clothes and etc..
Next week the students will continue to pay their bills and make choices on their monthly budget.
Internship II:
The students did a workshop at the UCM Career Service Office. This partnership that we developed with each other will be two workshops a month for the students. The students will begin utilizing the resources at the Career Service Office. Those resources include interview skills, resume building, mock interviews, and professional dress attire. We appreciate Carson and Emily hosting these workshops for us.
Some pictures of our students getting some orientation from the Career Center on their services. They will continue to meet with them over the course of the semester. Great Job, Dr. Manning at getting this set up!
Internship II- (Dr. Manning):
Plato-
Most students are completing their plato on time. A few are having a hard time remembering to get it done.
THRIVE Activities:
Mentor Activities:
Last weekend, Abbie had a Valentine’s day party.
This coming weekend, Savanna will have another cooking activity for the students. I’ve heard it’s going to be a yummy treat. More to come...
