THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar
It’s been a busy week. We had our first family interviews for our applicants for next fall. It’s an exciting time for the THRIVE staff and the future families of THRIVE students.
First-Year Students:
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
The students did their first job shadow this week. We had students job shadowing at UCM Child Care Center, UCM Student Activities Office, UCM Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC), and at RISE Crafts Store. Their job shadow consists of 2 days and each day is around 2-3 hours at the particular location. After the job shadows, the students are supposed to write a reflection of the job shadow and a thank you note to that particular location. The students will do two more job shadows this semester.
Some pictures from our morning class.
Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard):
Monday students were given an open book test. It was due Wednesday. Explaining to the students that an open book test does not necessarily mean an easy test in college. Students were encouraged to use all their resources. Wednesday several assignments were open on blackboard. Students were to start reading chapter two with their study groups, complete definition index cards, and word search for the chapter. Friday goal setting was discussed.
Personal Math- (Mrs. Garnier):
Students turned in their “Budgeting with Roommates” team project. We started work on creating salary-based budgets. In this budgeting activity, each student will use an excel spreadsheet to create a budget based on a specific career and step-by-step instructions for expense amounts in the areas of Cost of Living (rent, internet, utilities, etc.) Transportation (public transit, car costs), Food, and Health. Other budget areas include Income, Savings, Education, and Discretionary Spending. They will evaluate “needs” and “wants” and budget accordingly.
Our first-year students had their first round of job shadows last week, you might want to see what your student thought if you haven’t heard yet.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning):
We continue to work on a monthly budget by using our monthly income and what we project our expenses might be for rent, utilities, entertainment, cellphone and etc… The students had an assignment to look for apartments in their hometown. The students had to find three different apartment complexes and give a description of the apartment - rent, amenities, utilities, pets, laundry and etc...
Internship II- (Dr. Manning):
The students are doing a wonderful job at their internship. They are staying very busy between internships, classes, meetings, and school work. Sometimes we have to have a discussion about time management and having balance in our lives. Further, we have to have discussions on expectations from having an internship/job and what those expectations are. We may not like some of our duties at our internships but the expectation is that we will work to our best ability and not complain.
Plato-
All students had new February assessments. Students were encouraged to take the time on each one.
THRIVE Activities:
Mentor Activities:
Last weekend, Alex had another cooking activity. Looks like the students had fun.
This coming weekend, Abbie will have another activity for the students.
Just a reminder that the pictures posted on the blog are typically just a sample of what is on Facebook. So, if you want to see more and keep more updated, please go to our Facebook page - UCM-THRIVE.
Important upcoming dates:
Spring sports are starting up so the students can take advantage of going to these activities. They are limiting the crowd.
Also, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics: Students will need to watch the back table for any upcoming activities.
THRIVE Family Interviews were held during the week of 2/1-2/5 and also 2/22-2/26. The students will still have homework during these weeks. The homework may be done on their own or in smaller groups.
