Week 2/22 Blog
THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar
It’s been another extremely cold week. We didn’t have classes on Monday and most of Wednesday but some students did have Zoom or Google Hangout classes/meetings.
First-Year Students:
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
Monday campus was closed. Dr. Manning started meeting with each student individually about their reflection paper. We would like to see each student work on their writing skills. Students were encouraged to explain, expand and elaborate on their next reflection paper. We would like to see each student's writing skills increase. Personal space and body language were the topics this week.
Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard):
Monday was a snow day. Wednesday several things were discussed:
Students, please respond to emails and posts on Edmodo.
Study hall is open to all students from Sunday to Thursday rather it's your night or not to attend.
Students presented their posters.
Zig Ziglar videos and the statement “Do it now.”
Plato
Friday we took an online test. Students were encouraged to take it twice and the computer would keep the best score. Also, students should have chapter 3 uploaded to notability for Monday.
The students did posters of their dreams, strengths, Actions, Needs, and Road Blocks.
Personal Math- (Mrs. Garnier):
We started our second unit, which is on Banking. Students were introduced to checking accounts, savings accounts, and interest-earning bank accounts. We also revisited the salary-based budget by doing one in an excel spreadsheet in class. The students were very attentive and gained a fuller understanding of what a real-world budget looks like.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning):
We continue to work on monthly budgets and money skills. The students are struggling with some with needs and wants with their budget.
Our next assignment is going to research different transportation options in their community. These transportation options may include getting a driver's license, public transportation (bus, trolley, taxi), private organization (W-ILS, RISE, OATS), and can they walk/ride a bike to different locations.
Internship II- (Dr. Manning):
Mrs. Danelle Reid (UCM OAS Director) presented to the class on Employment Interview questions that an interviewer can and cannot ask during an interview. Mrs. Reid discussed individuals with disabilities on what that individual should discuss in a job interview. The students had a lot of questions and comments on this topic. Collaborating with Mrs. Reid and the UCM Carer Service Office throughout this semester the students are gaining knowledge on pursuing a job and interviewing skills.
Plato-
First-year students were reminded a couple of times this week to:
Not skip around on plato but to answer the questions in order
If they do not master a section go back to the tutorial and repeat it.
Speed is helpful when working on Plato. Students' goal should be to master each section.
Several first years did not complete their plato last week. So they are working diligently to get caught up this week.
THRIVE Activities:
The students had lots of activities to participate in this week. Student CEC group Bowling night:
It looks like they had lots of fun...
Mentor Activities:
This last weekend, Savanna had another cooking activity for the students. Chocolate Chip Cream Cheese Banana Bread. Yummy stuff going on in the THRIVE Suite...
This coming weekend, Claire will have another activity, you’ll have to wait and see what it might be...
