THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar
I apologize this is a couple of days late. A reminder that next week, the dorms will open back up on Sunday, March 21st at noon.
Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard):
Our counselor in training did a refresher course in effective communication that included manipulation or even lying to a friend. Students this week are working on their critical thinking skills and writing skills on a project called “The Lifeboat”. Friday we worked on getting caught up on assignments.
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
A topic this week centered around getting a summer job or volunteering. The importance of getting that experience over the summer. Places that needed volunteers. Also discussed was the importance of being independent by cleaning up after themselves, doing their own laundry, and helping out at home. Another topic was problem-solving skills and the importance of taking responsibility and the initiative to solve problems on their own on the job.
Personal Math- (Mrs. Garnier):
This week we reviewed money math and prepared for the test over Unit 2: Banking. The test is 25 questions worth 30 points on Blackboard. It opened at 8:00 a.m. on Friday the 12th and closes on Monday the 15th at 5:00 p.m. I hope everyone has a great, restful, and rejuvenating Spring break!
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning):
The students continue working on the transition from being a UCM THRIVE student to their next chapter in their lives. We want the students to make contact with Vocational Rehabilitation and other organizations within their community over spring break. Further, we want the students to start filling out job applications or applications if the student is going to continue their education.
Internship II- (Dr. Manning):
The students continue to work with the UCM Career Service Office. This week they discussed proper interviewing clothes. Carson and Emily showed the students what to wear during the interview process. The students also were able to use their UCM student ID to get four free items from the professional store attire that UCM Career Service Office provides.
Way to go Taylor!! Working hard at the Food Pantry on campus.
Plato- They were reminded the plato report will be run this Monday, March 15th even though it will be on spring break. If they did not complete it this week I will email students and parents they will need to finish it during spring break.
THRIVE Activities:
The Bowling teams will actually have one more bowling opportunity the week after they get back on campus.
Mentor Activities:
Mentor activities will start back up the week after the students get back from Spring Break.
Next weekend Savanna will have another cooking activity.
