THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar.

Director Notes:

Thank you to all the families that were able to participate in our first virtual family meeting. We were able to meet with all 2nd-year families the week before Spring Break and met with most of the first-year families the week after Spring Break. We are going to look at having more of these in the future.

Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard):

This week we started Chapter 4. Assignments were due daily. We watched a 6-minute video on things that distract us from studying. Also covered was how problem-solving on each of the distractions. Wednesday we talked about a mnemonic device. And gave some examples. Friday we discussed an assignment that was due and played a review game called quizizz.

Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):

Problem-solving scenarios were discussed related to job and career situations. Assignments coming up in April were discussed. Students were asked to tweak their resumes to include references, correcting grammar and spelling. Students took a stress test to determine their stress levels. Friday was a problem-solving activity over in the morrow gym led by Dr. Manning. Pictures are below… looks like fun.

Personal Math- (Mrs. Garnier):

We started learning about credit in terms of various types of loans and credit cards this week. Students are learning that credit cards can be dangerous and to manage them effectively, the balance must be paid off every month. We are learning about interest, fixed vs. variable rates, and how to make good decisions when considering borrowing money or using credit cards.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning):

We started working on professional portfolios.  The students’ professional portfolio should have a cover letter, resume, professional development plan (PDP), and reference letters.  We have asked the students to start asking individuals for reference letters to put in their portfolios.  We would like to have at least three of the reference letters from their UCM professors and supervisors from their internships.

 Internship II- (Dr. Manning):

This week we discussed problem-solving and critical thinking skills in the workplace.  During our discussion, the subject came up on how to work with an upset customer in the workplace.  We talked about different situations that may take place with an upset customer and what we could do to help the customer.  Further, we discussed if the customer was yelling at you what could you do without yelling back at the customer.

The students also did another good workshop with the UCM Career Service Office.  Today the students worked on interviewing skills and interviews.  Here in a couple of weeks, the students will do interviews at the Career Service Office.

Plato- Glad to report students completed their plato from the week before break.
