Week 4/5 Posting
THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar
Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard):
This week we worked on Chapter 4 about memory and learning. Some topics discussed were acronyms, acrostics, mnemonic devices, and other cues to help us remember. Students had daily assignments in class to turn in.
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
We finished talking about stress and ways to deal with it. Dr. Manning discussed cover letters and students received an assignment about that. Students completed their last job shadowing experience this week. Students were asked to write about each job shadowing experience. The first one students were asked to write one paragraph, the second job shadowing two paragraphs was assigned. With the last one students were asked to write one page. Mrs. Southard wrote a list on the board of ideas on what could be included in their paper. The phrase we have used many times in THRIVE is explain, expand, elaborate on papers. Friday our counselor in training presented a refresher course on coping skills that can be used quickly and accessed easily when needed.
Personal Math- (Mrs. Garnier):
This week we talked about behavioral finance. Our discussion included how context can determine value. When asked outright if they would choose a diamond or a bottle of water, about half the class chose the diamond and half chose the water. The reasons stated for choosing a diamond were that it had a higher monetary value than a bottle of water. The reasons stated for choosing the water were health-related. They were then given the same choice in the specific context of being lost in the desert. Everyone chose water as the higher value item in that situation. It was a good illustration of how things of high monetary value aren’t always the best choice in the context of our situations.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning):
We are in the process of finishing out the last month of these students being a UCM THRIVE student. We continue to discuss communication skills and how to use these communication skills in our daily lives. Further, we will be working on filling out job applications this week.
We had a very good discussion on confidence and how to continue to improve our confidence in our abilities. The more we experience and go outside our comfort zone the more our confidence may grow.
Internship II- (Dr. Manning):
Internships continue to go well. The expectation is for the students to work their internships all the way until they leave for the semester. Finals week is May 3rd - May 7th and the students need to work their internships that week until they move out of the dorms.
We caught Jack doing his internship at the Union. Great job of cleaning the tables for students to use, Jack!!
Plato- Students continue to work on each topic. Most students completed it on time. Students need to take their time on each lesson.
