Blog for Week 9/13

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

First-Year Students:

University Foundations: Debra Southard

This week's topic is time management. Students made their own todo list. We have several ways to make a to-do list using apps or just writing it down. We used notability to take notes on chapter 3. Every Thursday point sheets are due. About half the students completed the sheets. Thursday during class time was taken up completing point sheets, deposit slips, and store purchase papers.

Individual & Family Health and Relationships:  Debra Southard & Lisa Garnier

The topic this week was abusive relationships. We watched an old but goodie video about a young couple. We identified the red flags in relationships that were shown in the video as well as listed others that were not. Wednesday we played Kahoots and Quizziz. The students did great at answering questions about relationships. Friday the topic was love, how to know if you are in love, self-love,  and infatuation.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

We’ve been busy learning about basic computer software and how to use it. This week we learned about Microsoft Excel. Students are using an excel spreadsheet template to create a pretend budget. We are doing this in class. The purpose is for students to recognize the real-world applications for this software. It will also allow them to list having worked with Excel on a resume.

Career Exploration: Michael Brunkhorst

This week the students worked with their 4150 class students to search a new website with more valuable information about their careers, Career One-Stop.  The students will learn a bit more about their interests and what skills they may still need.  Next week they will look over their results of the Career Cluster and go more in-depth into the top 6 clusters, what else will they find that might interest them??  We’ll see.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

This week we started to discuss Habit 2 “Begin with the end in mind”.  I had a picture of the UCM graduation ceremony up and talked about how graduation is the end in mind.  How will the students accomplish this goal? All Of them said to study, get school work done, and to take care of our business every day.

Internship I: Gary Manning

Internships are going very well.  Supervisors are very pleased with the students' work ethic and their soft skills.  However, we still need to work on not having their cell phones out during internship times.  As for hard skills we are still working on these skills.  Hard skills are harder to learn and take time.  Some of the hard skills that students are learning are operating equipment, use technology, and customer service skills.

Just a few pics of our students at their internships...

Plato: Debra Southard

Some students are doing well-completing plato every week. Some students struggle with remembering to work on plato. The classroom is open every day at 2:00 for students to come in and work. We had volunteers/ tutors at that time. Study hall is also available for students to attend five times a week.

THRIVE Activities:

Softball Games:

For the next three Tuesday nights, our THRIVE softball team will be playing at 7 pm at the Jennie’s complex on DD highway.  If parents want to come to cheer on the team please do so.  Unfortunately, there are times that some students may not play due to late homework, so please get with your student on Tuesday afternoon to see if they are playing.  We’d love to have families there.

Mentor Activities: Savanna had the students make Chicken Spaghetti.  Looks yummy...

Great Job Everyone!!  For more pictures please join our THRIVE Facebook and/or Instagram pages.

Important upcoming dates:

Next Mentor Activity:  This coming weekend we hope that many of our families are back in town for our THRIVE Reunion.  THRIVE started back in the Fall of 2010 with 12 students and about 5 staff members and 5 mentors.  It’s grown to over 130 students that have called UCM - THRIVE Program home.  We hope to see our current families there, also.

Four-Year program details: Over the next few months we will have opportunities for families to learn more about our 3rd- and 4th-year options.  The third-year will start next fall, so families of 2nd-year students would be able to look at this option for their students.  We hope to have some new documents printed and ready in early October to start sharing with families, then we’ll have a Zoom meeting in late October to help families with this process.

Down Syndrome Walk:

October 16th we have a group of students going to the Down Syndrome walk at Arrowhead stadium.  We will leave early Saturday and then return on campus in mid-afternoon.  I’ll make sure and post some photos.
