Week of 8/30 Blog
THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.
First-Year Students:
University Foundations: Debra Southard We took a tour of the learning commons in the library. They explained the services they provided to all UCM students. We went over Chapter one this week. Topics of discussion included: connecting to others on campus, expectations of instructors, differences between high school and college, and smart goals.
Nash was helping the students get ready for the weekend… it was so tiring.
Individual & Family Health and Relationships: Debra Southard & Lisa Garnier
The topic in IFHR this week was conflict resolution and getting along with other people. Students talked about the importance of respect and compromise in dealing with conflict. They learned that it’s possible for both parties to be right and sometimes we have to agree to disagree. We emphasized the point that we don’t always know what is going on in someone’s life that may be affecting actions and behaviors, so it’s important to talk to each other to truly understand the situation.
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
This week in Tech Lit we learned how to write and send a formal email and proper email etiquette for work/school/professional email correspondence. Students also learned how to spot scam emails and how to report them to their email provider. We also discussed internet safety, guarding personal information, creating strong passwords, and how to create strong passwords. We also talked about digital footprints and how once something is on the internet, it’s out there forever.
Career Exploration: Michael Brunkhorst
This week the students worked with their 4150 class students on “Who am I”. It’s a worksheet that will help them think about why they are looking at a career and what they think they’ll need to do to get there. During class, they will also learn about their first assessment. They will work on this assignment with their 4150 student.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
We continue to discuss the students' SMART goals for the semester. Within that discussion, the students are figuring out how to accomplish their goals. Are there resources they need to utilize to accomplish the goals? How can they be independent and responsible to accomplish the goals? What are the positive and negative consequences as you make choices to accomplish these goals? Unfortunately, sometimes we have to fail at our goals at first and learn from their failures to be able to accomplish our goals in the future.
Internship I: Gary Manning
The students are realizing that having a job may take away from being able to do other activities. The students just cannot go to their jobs so they can go do other things. This is hard for the students to understand at times and frustrating for the students. We try to make their internships as realistic as possible in having a job. Some of our students have never had a job and where they are responsible for going to their job and working at the job. Again, this is a learning experience for the students. Further, the students are learning at their internship, they may be doing tasks that they do not want to do or the students do the same tasks a lot. Like we discuss in class this can be a normal event at a job but you can still learn from this.
A few students at their internships…
Plato: Debra Southard
Students are working hard on Plato. Some first-years have worked behind the assigned time. First-year students learned how to look at the rewards and can keep track of how much time they have left.
THRIVE Activities:
Mentor Activities: Katie had a cooking activity… Yummy lasagna rolls.
Great Job Everyone!! For more pictures please join our THRIVE Facebook and/or Instagram pages.
We also had Get the Red Out activities before our first home football game last Thursday night. Here are a few pictures from that event.
Important upcoming dates:
Next Mentor Activity: This Friday night, Claire will have our first Archery activity at the Rec Center. Students can sign up for this on their calendars. We’ve had much success with this event in the past.
Four Year program details: Over the next few months we will have opportunities for families to learn more about our 3rd- and 4th-year options. The third-year will start next fall, so families of 2nd-year students would be able to look at this option for their student.
