THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

Possible Roommate Changes:

Hello Families, in early November we’ll send each of our students a Google Form to fill out.  At the end of the semester, all students on campus have the ability to change roommates.  So we have done the same for the last few years.  If students don’t want to change they don’t have to, they’ll tell us in this form.  If they do, we ask that they let us know their top 5 choices of roommates, then who they don’t want to roommate with.  Then the staff works hard to make all students happy, unfortunately, sometimes this doesn’t work out but we do our best.  We do tell them that many times it’s not the best decision to room with your best friend.  We’ve had students, over the years, try this and end up not being the best of friends.  We encourage you to discuss this.  We will let students know the week prior to Thanksgiving Break who they are rooming with if there is a change.  Then the week they get back from break THRIVE staff and other students will help make the moves so everyone is moved before they leave for Winter Break.

First-Year Students:

University Foundations: Debra Southard

This week we switched books and changed focus. Students had two assignments to turn in. This half of the semester students will work on their writing skills.  Topics of the week were ambition, success, drive and ability. Students were also reminded to be an advocate for themselves and others.

Individual & Family Health and Relationships:  Debra Southard & Lisa Garnier

We talked about family structure and building strong family relationships this week. Topics included commitment, communication, and creative problem-solving. On Wednesday Sgt. Lewis of Public Safety gave a presentation on protecting possessions in the dorm and on campus.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

We had a session on how to care for computers to keep them running longer. We also began learning about iMovies. Students’ final project in Tech will be to create an iMovie trailer on their iPads. They will be partnered off and each pair will be assigned a children’s book to create a movie trailer for. The books will all have valuable life lessons and morals to encourage the kids to self-reflect.

Career Exploration: Michael Brunkhorst

Last week the students will discuss some of what they learned from their last assessment of this semester from Missouri Connections.  The hope is the students have been able to find other job possibilities and interests.  They will also start to think about their resume.  Over the next few weeks, they will work on different parts of their resume, to add to their portfolio.

Bowling Class:  Studying how to score???

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

We have been discussing a lot about relationships and how to communicate in a relationship.  A relationship can be with your family, friends, roommates, boyfriend/girlfriend, classmates, and co-workers.  Each relationship will be different and how you may communicate within that relationship.  The students are working on being a self-advocate within a relationship but doing this self-advocacy in a respectful manner.

Internship I: Gary Manning

We are working on resumes and cover letters.  The students are turning in their rough draft this week.  Further, the students continue to discuss internships for the spring semester.  By the time semester ends the students should know where their spring internship will be.

Here are some internship pictures…

Plato: Debra Southard

Most students completed Plato last week. Just a reminder students can work on Plato any time that it fits into their schedule. If they complete one hour five days a week that is perfect!

A little workout…
