Blog Week 2/20
THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar.
Notes from the Director:
Just a reminder about confidentiality and our students. If families have any questions please always contact either Mrs. Southard (First-Year) or Dr. Manning (Second-Year). I’m always a backup to either one of these. Please don’t contact other THRIVE students or mentors to discuss matters. If you have any questions, please contact me.
Our team is starting to gear up for next year. Your students in the coming weeks will be choosing classes for next year. They will be asked to pick 5 classes that they’d like to take from the catalog and put them in order of preference. Then email Dr. Manning/Mrs. Southard. We’d suggest talking to your students about what they are thinking about taking. Then in mid-March Dr. Manning will start to enroll the students for the 2022 Fall semester.
Mr. B will be sending out emails to families to send letters of intent for the fall semester to First-Year students. This will help us with enrollment and dorm room ideas. Please watch for this email.

First-Year Students:
Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):
Topics this week were the differences between feedback, criticism, and praise. We also discussed some possible scenarios at work and how to handle them. Students finished up their job shadowing and were asked to write two paragraphs about their experiences. Students were also asked to write a thank-you note to the person they job shadowed.
Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard)
Monday we took a test on blackboard covering Chapter 3. We talked about note-taking this week. What is an acronym was discussed and who knew the most. Students were encouraged to get out (not in a blizzard) and participate in campus activities. Some are struggling with that.
Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS)- (Mrs. Garnier)
This week we focused on personal safety. We covered the obvious things such as smoke detectors and the not-so-obvious things like using oven mitts to remove items from the microwave. We also talked about the best persons to ask for assistance in a range of scenarios.
A bit of studying from a first-year student:
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning)
We continue to discuss monthly budgets. The students will have to decide on wants and needs for that month. They may have to cut their budget on entertainment or other wants to make sure they do not overspend on their income. It can be hard to make decisions like this.
Internship II: (Dr. Manning)
The students are updating their resumes and working with the UCM Career Service Office on their resumes this week and next week. The students also have to write about their internships. They have to write about what they have learned at their internship and what is challenging for them at their internship.
Plato- (Mrs. Southard) Most students completed plato last month. Students are encouraged to work on Plato when they have a snow day.

THRIVE Activities:
Mentor Activities:
This week Paige and the students went to see the movie Ghostbusters-Afterlife. They had so much fun that we didn’t get a picture.
Just a reminder that the pictures posted on the blog are typically just a sample of what is on Facebook. So, if you want to see more and keep more updated, please go to our Facebook page - UCM-THRIVE.
Important upcoming dates:
Spring sports are starting up so the students can take advantage of going to these activities. A sign-up sheet for softball is out… We have enough students to make a team. Once the schedule is up I’ll include it with this blog.
In addition, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics: Students will need to watch the back table for any upcoming activities. Our next activity will be co-ed softball in about a month.
