Blog Week 3/21

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar.

Notes from the Director:

Our team is starting to gear up for next year.  Dr. Manning will be getting your student enrolled in classes.  They were asked to pick 5 classes that they’d like to take from the catalog and put them in order of preference.

If you haven’t sent your letter of Intent for next Fall/Spring please do so soon as we will be looking at room assignments in the coming week.  Mr. B has sent out emails to families to send letters of intent for the fall semester to First-Year students.  This will help us with enrollment and dorm room ideas.  Please watch for this email.

New happenings may be coming to Ellis Dining Hall.  The students may have received the information but I wanted to make sure that the families were aware.  They might be remodeling Ellis Dining Hall in January of 2023.  They are waiting on final approval.  The students will still be staying in the same hall with our mentors during this remodel.  I’ll let families and students know of any new information on an alternate dining hall location.

First-Year Students:

Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):

Monday we discussed soft skills. Skills all workers need to be successful. For the rest of the week we are updating our resumes and references.

Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard)

Chapter 8 is the topic this week. How to highlight a textbook. We also had a few small assignments as well as using the website. www.flipgrid.com where students can make and post a 20-second video for others to see about what they did over spring break. I have a couple of male students that have started the self-defense class presented by Public Safety on campus.

Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS)-  (Mrs. Garnier)

We’ve started our last unit of the semester. It is on basic financial literacy. This week we talked about what financial literacy is and learned how to review a pay stub and understand all the information it contains.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning)

We continue the process of looking towards what the next couple of months are happening.  This includes graduation from the THRIVE program, moving back to the students’ hometown or the student coming back to UCM for the third year.  All of these transitions are a change for the students and the families.  The students and families have a lot of different resources available to them please make sure you utilize the resources.

Internship II:  (Dr. Manning)the students have been organizing their professional portfolios.  Within the portfolio, the students need a resume, cover letter, 3 reference letters, and any other documents that may help them in applying for a job.

The goal is for the student to start applying for jobs/summer jobs the first week in April.  The students are looking at different classifieds/job searches to help with this process.

Plato- (Mrs. Southard)

All students had two new subjects these eight weeks.  They had the usual reading, writing.  And Math The new subjects are Health and U.S. History. They have had health before but this is an updated version. At this point, all students should be about to complete plato weekly without having to be reminded. Mrs. Southard is not going to send reminders out. Monday morning the plato report will be run. Any student that has not completed their time will be asked to attend study hall. Students were also asked to slow down when working on plato. Just clicking through the statements will not make the time go faster.  Speed is not important as it increases a student's comprehension.

THRIVE Activities:

Softball will be starting on Monday nights at 7 pm at the Jennies field off of DD highway south of Warrensburg.  We were rained out on Monday night.  We’ll try again next week.

Mentor Activities:

The next mentor activity will be this Sunday the 19th.  Hope and Shahd will be showing the small group of students how to make Yogurt Parfaits…

Just a reminder that the pictures posted on the blog are typically just a sample of what is on Facebook.  So, if you want to see more and keep more updated, please go to our Facebook page - UCM-THRIVE.

Important upcoming dates:

Softball will be starting up soon.  Once I receive the dates and times I’ll post them here.

In addition, the students can participate in Intramural Athletics: Students will need to watch the back table for any upcoming activities.
