Week 4/25 Blog

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar.

Notes from the Director:

Our team is gearing up for next year.  Dr. Manning has been enrolling students in classes.  They were asked to pick 5 classes that they’d like to take from the catalog and put them in order of preference.

FINALS and leave times for students:

Last week the students and teachers discussed their final times so that they could get with their families on a good pick-up time.  I also shared a Google Form with them so that they could tell me when they are planning on leaving.  I know that for the 1st-year students their last final is on Thursday Afternoon, so they should be ready to leave anytime after that.  2nd-Year students have more variety in when their last final is and also may work in their internship that week, as well.  We’d suggest getting with the students first, as we are trying to help them gain some skills and should know when these are.  If not, get with either Mrs. Southard ( First year) or Dr. Manning (Second Year).  If they haven’t talked to you about this please get with them tonight or tomorrow night.  I’ll be asking them to finish this Google Form soon.  They will also have to set up check-out times with the RA on our floor.  The teachers discussed this process today, Monday the 25th, and they should receive an email shortly with the instructions and also on their dorm room doors.  We will ask that they fill this out as soon as possible as the RA’s times will fill up on the last days and this may change your pick-up schedule.

DORM Update for next Fall/Spring:

In the past month, THRIVE staff learned that Ellis Dining hall was going to be remodeled next Spring semester.  While we are happy that the dining hall is getting some additions we learned that the dining hall choices were going to be on the other side of campus.  With this in mind THRIVE staff and Housing began to contemplate an option for our students.  Todd Dining hall is on the other side of campus just SouthWest of the Union.

After careful consideration, the THRIVE Staff and Housing have decided to move the THRIVE Hall for next year’s fall and spring semesters.  Due to the remodel the other options for students for dining were on the other side of campus.  This creates concern during the winter months, especially, for students to have to walk to the other side of campus during inclement weather.  So, next fall/spring the students and mentors will be moved to South Yeater.  This is right next to the Todd Dining hall and creates a better climate for our students during the Ellis dining hall remodel.  S. Yeater has an elevator and multiple locations for the students to lounge or study on the ground floor, first floor, and third floor of the complex.  We are still interviewing for next year’s first-year students.  Once we finalize the new students we’ll be able to finalize our roommate selections.  We typically let students know this a couple of weeks before the spring semester ends.  We brought the first-year students over on Monday to show them the building and show them where they might be.

We will still maintain mentor coverage where our students are located.  We understand that this is a new location for our students.  We’ll plan on taking the current first-year students on a tour of S. Yeater in the coming weeks.  We were excited to be able to keep everyone in the same building and closer to a dining hall during this time.  THRIVE will move back to the Ellis Complex after the remodel of Ellis is finished, we hope in time for the fall/spring of 2023/24 school year.

First-Year Students:

Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):

Students wrote cover letters to the place they want to intern next fall. Their final presentation was discussed and they will give it next week.

Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard)

Students finished up chapter 10 and completed Kahoots. Assigned was a 5-day study plan to each of the finals students will have in a couple of weeks.

A few students working hard after Mrs. Southard’s class on Monday.  Looks like they are getting their 5-day study plan put together.  We also have one of our great volunteers working with the students.  Great job!

Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS)-  (Mrs. Garnier)

We are finishing up the semester with some basic assessments and studying for the final exam. Our unit on spending has gone well. I look forward to continuing it more in-depth in Personal Finance in the fall semester.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning)

We are getting ready for the last week of classes and finals.  The students' final in this class will be on Monday, May 2nd. The students this week in class did the ARC assessment and the PSI assessment.  These two assessments give us data on how the students are growing as individuals in being independent and responsible.    Further, the data shows us how students are using problem-solving skills and how they make choices.

Internship II:  (Dr. Manning)

The students did very well in their mock interviews at the career service office.  The students will have a mock interview with the Thrive staff during finals week.  We have been discussing this interview during class time.

A couple of students working hard at their internships.  Great job!

Plato- (Mrs. Southard)

Students completed Plato. They will not have Plato finals week. But will have final assessments in the last week of April.
