Week 4/4 Blog

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to your students or UCM activity calendar.

Notes from the Director:

Our team is starting to gear up for next year.  Dr. Manning is getting your student enrolled in classes.  They were asked to pick 5 classes that they’d like to take from the catalog and put them in order of preference.   UPDATE: Most students have their classes set for next Fall.

New happenings may be coming to Ellis Dining Hall.  The students may have received the information but I wanted to make sure that the families were aware.  They will be remodeling Ellis Dining Hall in January of 2023.  I’ll let families and students know of any new information on an alternate dining hall location.  I hope to have updated information soon.

First-Year Students:

Workplace & Community Skills - (Mrs. Southard and Dr. Manning):

Students are working on revising their resumes Also this week students participated in another job shadowing experience. They wrote thank-you notes to the people they job shadowed. Dr. Manning explained a cover letter and students are working on that as well.

So many pictures…

Learning Strategies- (Mrs. Southard)

Monday students took a test over chapter 8 on how to highlight in a college textbook. Wednesday and Friday we had work sessions writing about the hardest assignment they have had this year and what they learned from that. Also, students are practicing speaking in front of others by using flipgrid.com.  Students are encouraged to keep participating in social activities.

Wow, I love the technology that Mrs. Southard is having the students do.  I’m going to have to look into this… they all were engaged in their learning.

Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS)-  (Mrs. Garnier)

This was Budgeting week. Students learned how to identify “wants” vs “needs” and, as usual, they were surprised to know that while a cell phone may be a “need” the latest, most expensive version with all the bells and whistles is probably a “want.” The lesson is that the latest version, or the name brand, is what we may “want,” but our need could probably be met with a less expensive choice that just does what we need it to do. Similarly, we “need” clothes, but we “want” designer labels. We also learned the basics of creating a budget based on our needs first, then set aside money for wants.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II: (Dr. Manning)

We continue talking about the end of the semester and what the summer may look like for the students.  We would like for all the students to either work, volunteer, or do an internship this summer.

The students were also assigned a video for part of their final.  The video is about what the student has done here at UCM over the past two years.

Internship II:  (Dr. Manning)

We are in the process of filling out job applications and using the students’ professional portfolios to help with the job application.  The students did another workshop at the UCM Career Service Office this week.  The workshop was on cover letter writing.  We will have two more workshops at the Career Service Office before the semester is over.

Austin did a great job at his internship…

Plato- (Mrs. Southard)

Students are doing well with Plato. Monday (03/28/22) morning when I ran the report almost everyone had it completed. The couple of students that did not was able to complete it before 3:00 that day. So they did not have to go to study hall plus.

THRIVE Activities:

We hopefully will have our second softball game tonight.  I’ll keep you posted on Facebook if things change.  I’ll also try to get pictures online in a couple of days after the game.

Mentor Activities:

The next mentor activity was Saturday.  Savanna and Blair planned lunch of tostadas and Rice/beans.  The pictures below…

Just a reminder that the pictures posted on the blog are typically just a sample of what is on Facebook.  So, if you want to see more and keep more updated, please go to our Facebook page - UCM-THRIVE.

Important upcoming dates:

Softball will be starting up soon.  Last week we played our first game, boy was it cold.  We lost by three points in the last inning.  We hope that some parents might be able to attend.  Last week we had a couple of fans helping to cheer our team on.
