THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.
First-Year Students:
Director Notes:
Overall, all students have done a great job. The first day was probably the best day we’ve had for the first day of the year. All students made it to their classes. I’ve been impressed with the work that students are doing and the amount of students that are already trying to find places to study and asking for help. It’s been a great start to the year.
University Foundations: Debra Southard
Students were reminded this week to include in homework submitted on blackboard their names and title of the assignment. Many students did not use the activity app which helps us know who is attending campus activities. Point sheets were discussed again. Some discussion centered around using the Office of Accessibility and completing a pink sheet for that office. Students were reminded not to leave a mess in one of Yeater lounges. It's always good to pick up trash even if it's not yours. Their first test was discussed. Which is next week.
Individual Relationships and Health: Joni Shelton
This past week we continued our lessons about communications. We explored the impact Non-Verbal Communications and Gossiping. We ended the week with a Kahoots review of relationships and communications. Students did great on the review, and it seemed to be a great way to end our 3 weeks together before sending them off to a holiday weekend.
Technology Literacy: Victoria O’Reilly
This week in Tech Literacy, students worked hard on creating their own Google Slides Presentation on a topic they felt passionate about. They had the freedom to create their own presentation with the expectation that they used several of the skills we’d been working on such as adding photos and videos into slides, exploring text fonts and colors, and incorporating a minimum number of slides. I then gave them all an option to present to their peers in small groups or the whole class. We did a session of peer presentation followed by six teams of students who presented to the whole class. They all did an incredible job and I am so proud.
Career Exploration: Gary Manning
We started to discuss goals and what the student may be interested in. The students are working on the Missouri Connection. The first assignment in Missouri Connect was an the Career Cluster profile. This gives the students and THRIVE staff an idea of what the student is interested in and what the student may want to pursue in classes
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
We continue to discuss the students' SMART goals for the semester. Within that discussion, the students are figuring out how to accomplish their goals. Are there resources they need to utilize to accomplish the goals? How can they be independent and responsible to accomplish the goals? What are the positive and negative consequences as you make choices to accomplish these goals? Unfortunately, sometimes we have to fail at our goals at first and learn from their failures to be able to accomplish our goals in the future.
Internship I: Gary Manning
The students are realizing that having a job may take away from being able to do other activities. The students just cannot go to their jobs so they can go do other things. This is hard for the students to understand at times and frustrating for students. We try to make their internships as realistic as possible in having a job. Some of our students have never had a job and where they are responsible for going to their job and working at the job. Again, this is a learning experience for the students. Further, the students are learning at their internship, they may be doing tasks that they do not want to do or the students do the same tasks a lot. As we discuss in class this can be a normal event at a job but you can still learn from this.
Third-Year Students:
Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier
Students began work on the first concept from Designing Your Life which is “start where you are.” They are learning about how all elements of life--health, love, work, & play--go together in creating a life we love. Students are learning the importance of a balanced life and how work & life combine to give us success.
Internship III: Lisa Garnier
All students have started their internships, and I”m getting positive feedback. They are honing their time management skills by completing weekly internship timesheets and using Google calendars to manage classes, internships, appointments, and study schedules. The students are having to take more control of these tasks on their own as I supervise them.
Foods and Nutrition: Debra Southard
We met over in the Baptist Student Union this week. We baked cookies. Discussed preheating the oven, spacing of the cookies on the sheets, when to know when they are done, and different types of cookies. The students work well together and everyone is pleasant to each other. Which makes the class enjoyable for everyone. Friday we planned our next lab.
Johnson County Community Health came to discuss the Food Handling license…
Plato: Debra Southard
Some first-year students are struggling with time management. Some were working hard to complete Plato weekly. Some students are requested to attend study hall plus to complete their work. I would like to see more students working in the THRIVE classroom during the day. Students have been reminded to stay in the academic building during the day to work instead of going to their dorm room. It appears dorm rooms provide a distraction from getting their work completed.
