THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

First-Year Students:

Director Notes:

FAFSA becomes available online at fafsa.gov for next year.  I know many of you will wait until current tax information comes out but wanted to let families know.

Virtual Meetings:

I’ll be sending out an email about our fall virtual meetings.  They will be in a couple of weeks.  This is a good time to ask any questions, we’ll also be discussing what to expect for the Spring semester.  Also, for 2nd-and 3rd-year students, we’ll be looking at what you’ll need to do in the next couple of months.  Please watch for the email.

Spring Semester notes:

First-Year Students:

Our first-year students will be asked in the next few weeks to give 5 classes that they might like to take in the Spring Semester.  Then staff will look over their choices to help narrow it down to the class that fits in their schedule and gets back to the students on the final class options.

Second-Year Students:

The second-year students will be asked over the next few weeks to give 5 classes that they might like to take in the Spring Semester.  Then staff will look over their choices to help narrow it down to the class that fits in their schedule and gets back to the students on the final class options.  They will also be asked what internships they would like to have in the Spring.  We change their internships each semester so that they will have more experience and gain more skills.  In some instances, if students are in a paid position, we give the students a chance to stay at that internship as long as they can continue to learn new skills to help them in their future.

Spring Roommate Changes…. Maybe maybe not… First- & Second-Year students…

Also, in Late October the first-year students and second-year students are asked about spring roommates.  The students can stay with the same roommate or if they want to switch roommates they can let us know their top 5 roommates and a couple of other questions.  This helps staff look at what roommates want to move and which students don’t.  The staff look over their choices and make the best decision we can.  Any student moves are then done the week after Thanksgiving break.  This helps the students be ready for the Spring semester.  No families are asked to come back to help move.  THRIVE staff helps the students swap rooms and help get with Housing on any paperwork.

Third-Year Students:

The third-year students will be asked over the next few weeks to give 5 classes that they might like to take in the Spring Semester.  Then staff will look over their choices to help narrow it down to the class that fits in their schedule and gets back with the students on the final class options.  They will also be asked what internships they would like to have in the Spring.  We change their internships each semester so that they will have more experience and gain more skills.  In some instances, if students are in a paid position, we give the students a chance to stay at that internship as long as they can continue to learn new skills to help them in the future.

University Foundations: Debra Southard

This has been a busy week. We watched a movie called Door to Door. It was a true story about a man with cerebral palsy and the struggles he faced in life. I believe the students loved it when it was over they all clapped! Students are working on a Jamboard about Bill Porter. The character in the movie. Thursday we did something some students have never done. Dr. Manning arranged for the whole class to climb the rock wall. Students were asked to get out of their comfort zone. Everyone tried once and some students climbed more than once. Friday students were given their schedules for the last eight weeks of this semester. Several students' schedules changed.

Individual Relationships and Health:  Joni Shelton

On Tuesday, October 4 the University hosted a Healthy Relationships and Sexuality Fair in the Student Union. This was perfect timing, as we have been learning about and discussing Healthy Sexuality in our class. Students that attended and brought back evidence of attendance earned extra points in class. Students picked up information and stress-release devices, as seen in the pictures below. We continued our lesson on the reproductive system by discussing conception and the early stages of Pregnancy.

Technology Literacy:  Victoria O’Reilly

First-year Tech students finished up their Midterm Presentations this week. Each student presented their “About Me” Google Slide shows to the class. They were confident and professional! Everyone did an incredible job and I am so proud. We are all looking forward to the second half of the semester.

Career Exploration: Gary Manning

In last week's Career Exploration class, we went over their last Missouri Connections assessment.  We talked about personalities and what is valued in their lives. This helps them look at another aspect of work.  It’s not just all about the money.  To continue to maintain good employment we like for the students to look at what really matters to them.

 Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

In class, we are discussing Habit 3 - Put First Thing First.  We all procrastinate at times and then we fall behind in our work.  Once we fall behind we may get overwhelmed or very stressed.  This chapter it helps us to decide on what we need to get done first and then go down the list to the least important items.  I have encouraged the students to use planners, lists, and calendars to help them to be organized and responsible.  One of the biggest issues students have is peer pressure and wanting to hangout with friends instead of doing school work.

Internship I: Gary Manning

We continue to stress job skills and being professional at your job.  The students are doing well in their skills.  Some of the biggest items the students have problems with is using their phones at their job when they are not supposed to.  Students also get distracted and may socialize too much.  We talk about the difference between having good customer service skills and socializing too much with the customers

Personal Finance I: Lisa Garnier

We just finished our unit on banking and took our mid-term exam over that and our first unit on money in society and what motivates spending habits. The students are enjoying our work in class on financial concepts and learning how to read bank statements, reconcile bank statements, and scenarios on the best ways to pay for different expenses. Next week we will begin our budgeting unit!

Just hangin out in the Union…

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier

We are learning that balancing work/social/family life is a process. Students are evaluating how they approach all three and ways they can be proactive in managing time so they can be productive and enjoy all three aspects of life. They are also researching classes they want to take next semester outside the THRIVE classroom.

Internship III: Lisa Garnier

Students continue to submit weekly logs of what they have done and learned in their internships, and they have submitted a list of internship possibilities for next semester.

Foods and Nutrition: Debra Southard

This week we made omelets. The students did a great job. Most said they didn’t like omelets.  But when they discovered what they put in them is up to them they decided they were more enjoyable. We also talked about the nutritional value of eggs and how they could be prepared for any meal during the day.

Plato: Debra Southard

Plato seems to be doing well. Your students are to complete one hour of Plato five days a week in order to have it completed on schedule.

THRIVE Activities:

THRIVE Softball pictures.  The last game of the fall season.  They did so well this semester.  Don’t forget there are more pictures on our Facebook page (UCM - THRIVE)...

Great game everyone!

Dr. Manning and Mrs. Southard also had their classes meet at the Rock Climbing wall on Friday morning.  This was to show them that sometimes you have to be out of your comfort zone and try something new.  Each student tried it!  Great job students.  Here are some pictures.

Mentor Activities: This last weekend Siarah and the students made lasagna.  Looks yummy.

There will be more on Facebook soon.

Great Job Everyone!!  For more pictures please join our THRIVE Facebook and/or Instagram pages.

Important upcoming dates:

Next Mentor Activity:  Next weekend is Homecoming weekend so the mentors are helping out with the float and have been helping for the last 2-3 weeks getting ready for it.  I want to give a shout-out to all the Mentors…  They do an excellent job helping our students and planning these activities.

UCM Athletics:

The THRIVE Softball team had their last game Monday night.

Some students have signed up for Ping Pong, we’ll try to have pictures up for that in the coming weeks.

There are lots more pictures on our Facebook page.

There are also three other activities that students said they’d be interested in that are on the back counter.  Badminton, 3 on 3 Basketball, and Pickleball Tournament.  I’ll update you as they get closer to the time.
