THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.

We combined last week and the week before.  We’ll get back on track next week.  Lots of things to read…

FAFSA Priority Date is coming soon... Please remember to update your student's FAFSA. It's not that hard the second time around...

Spring Open House:

The students did great and we had about 80-90 people at our open house.

First-Year Students:

Hello first-year families, just a reminder that if you are planning on returning to UCM for a second year please send a letter of intent to me. This can be as simple as emailing me or your student can write a letter and send it to me. This helps us know how to plan for next year.  The student will also want to go to their MyCentral page and fill out the housing agreement for next fall/spring 2023/24.

Learning Strategies: Debra Southard

Students were reminded if they have not read their syllabus for the classes they need to do that this week. We are working on writing to-do lists. I believe that has helped some students. Almost everyone used the activity app this past week. But many did not complete the discussion board. I noticed on the group app mentors said a few students seemed to be stressed out. So far that has accrued at or close to bedtime. So encouraging your student to go to bed in the evening when they are feeling overwhelmed may be a simple solution for some.  We started point sheets this week. They will always be due on Thursday morning. We are still on the topic of motivation. I'm hoping to finish this up soon.

Workplace & Community Skills:  Gary Manning

We discussed how to email professors, get organized for the new semester, and be proactive in completing assignments. We discussed job shadows for this semester and soft skills for a job.  This class does not have a textbook. Information will be presented in power points and other information is on Blackboard.

Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS):  Joni Shelton

In moving forward with healthy habits for daily living, we spent much of the week discussing nutritious eating. Students are keeping a log of the foods they eat for the week, and will review them and develop an action plan to improve their eating habits. Also, this week students reviewed their sleep logs and developed action plans to improve their sleep. We also discussed exercise and fitness, knowing that each of the 1st year students have a physical education class, I believe they all have a good understanding of how important it is to stay physically active. We are also discussing the importance of hygiene and cleanliness. This week and into the next students are keeping a chart documenting that they are practicing healthy hygiene habits and cleanliness on a regular basis.

Second-Year Students:

Notes from the Director:

Hello second-year families, just a reminder that if you are planning on returning to UCM for our optional third-year, please send a letter of intent to me.  This helps us know how to plan for next year.  Also, you’ll want to make sure your student goes into their MyCentral page and fills out the housing agreement for Fall of 2023 and if they are in an apartment do their new lease agreement.  They can call Housing if they have questions at 660-543-4515.  It’s important that you do this so that your student can have a chance at their top choice. If you change your mind the deposit can be returned to you.   If you aren’t planning on coming back for a third year please email me so I can also update our list.  We’ve already started to receive our letters of intent.  Please get yours in so we know what to plan…

Transition Planning II: Gary Manning

It is great to have the student back on campus and in class.  This semester is going to be fast and furious at times.  I really want the students to concentrate on what their goals are after   May 6th, 2023.  The students will need to have discussions/research on transportation, careers, and living arrangements.  Their families will need to be involved in these discussions with the students and us as staff.  We all need to be collaborating on these topics and getting outside resources/agencies involved before May 6th.  The THRIVE staff will be in contact with the families this semester on the next step and give the families resources they can use with the student’s transition from being THRIVE students to the students' next stage in their lives.

Internship II: Gary Manning

Internships have started well for the students.  Some places on UCM are struggling with hiring student-workers and that can affect the THRIVE students' internships and we have had some.  Especially with the UCM Child Care Center and Sodexo/Dining Halls.  The students are starting to realize again how important it is to be organized and use time management skills.

Personal Finance II: Mrs. Garnier

We are learning about different types of loans, interest, and amortization. Students had good questions about whether it’s better to rent an apartment or buy a house. We reviewed the importance of saving for a down payment if buying a house is their future goal and renting until they have enough money for a down payment on a home purchase. We talked about total household debt in the U.S. being over 16 TRILLION dollars, with the highest debt being in mortgages and credit cards. They are really starting to realize the responsibility involved in using other people’s money for their needs and wants.

A little study time:

Plato: Debra Southard

This week we have a few students that did not complete their plato on time. But for the most part, all did well. All students have two topics they selected. Many of the students tell me they like the subject they selected.

Third-Year Students:

Notes from the Director:

Hello third-year families, just a reminder that if you are planning on returning to UCM for a fourth year, please send a letter of intent to me. If you aren’t planning on coming back please email me so I can also update our list.  We’ve already started to receive our letters of intent.  Please get yours in so we know what to plan…

Transition Planning IV: Mrs. Garnier

We continue our unit on time management and using time wisely. We reviewed the time analysis sheet from last week and made adjustments to the categories, and we began tracking the next 168 hours (one week) of our time usage. Already they have noticed how easy it is to over/under estimate how much time they spend on things like homework, traveling from class to class, and hanging out with friends.

Internship IV: Mrs. Garnier

All students started internships this week, and they are all off to a good start so far.

Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs. Southard

The last couple of weeks included how to set a table. Students practiced this skill using a diagram to refer too. Also discussed was table manners. We talked about how different styles of dining required different table settings and different manners. Thursday we worked on improving our kitchen skills by chopping, slicing, dicing and more. Students did well.

A little slicing and dicing going on and then the students learned about proper table settings.
