Director Notes:
Students should be enrolled in their classes for the Spring semester. We also let the students know who their roommate would be, if there was a move this coming week, before Thanksgiving break. We hope this will help students bring home items that they don’t need.
Thanksgiving Break and Finals…
Information about Thanksgiving Break. All students will need to be out of the Dorms by 6 pm on November 17th. We are asking that families look at items that aren’t needed over the winter time and take some home. This will help with the organization of the rooms. Then all students are due back to UCM on Sunday the 26th. Dorms will open at noon.
Roommate changes:
The staff finished reviewing and made its final recommendation for student moves. Not all students wanted to move so we have a few rooms that stayed the same. Students were emailed this morning (Monday, 11/13) their roommates for the Spring Semester. Students are asked to make sure that anything that isn’t needed please go home with them for Thanksgiving break. This would include if there are now 2 TVs, 2 microwaves, or 2 mini-fridges. This will help THRIVE staff with their moves the week they get back from Thanksgiving Break. No families need to come, as we will get them moved. But, we do expect that the rooms are clean, organized, and ready for moving… Please contact your student if you want to know more about this.
First-Year Students:
University Foundations.Debra Southard
First-year students are preparing for the end of the year. Working on understanding the process of leaving for Thanksgiving and then for Christmas. Students received an email with their new roommate requests on Monday. Students were reminded this week to work hard and get things done. Students will be working a on three-page paper while on Thanksgiving break. The paper is about their lives. They can include what they want. We have been working on smaller writing assignments that students can use to cut and paste to help create the larger one.
Individual Relationships and Health: Joni Shelton
This past week in Health and Relationships we moved quickly through the topics of engagement, weddings, and marriage. We also reviewed the Reproductive system and then discussed conception, fertilization, and prenatal development. Students wore backpacks on their fronts and tried to bend down to tie shoe laces or pick up items that were on the floor to simulate what it is like for a pregnant woman.
Technology Literacy: Joni Shelton
Students began their final project, a Google Slides presentation about their semester in the Thrive program. Students will be sharing their presentations with the class when we return from Thanksgiving break.
Career Exploration: Gary Manning
We start discussing wants/needs. However, you need to make money for some wants & needs. We started discussing how much an individual will make. For example if an individual works 30 hours for the week making $10.75/hour, how much did the individual make before taxes are taken out. With that paycheck, we can discuss what you may need to spend the money on.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
This week in class we prepared for the final on Dec. 6th. The students will receive a study guide here. We will continue to review by using that study guide. If the students know the study guide they will do well on the test. The test will consist of the 7 Habits book, budget, and money scenarios.
Foods and Nutrition: Debra Southard
This week we make homemade biscuits. We went over the recipe and watched a video on Monday. We divided up the recipe into steps. Students successfully made them on Wednesday and Friday.
A little Jennies Basketball anyone…
Dawson was busy… here he is at the Jennie's Volleyball game…
Internship I: Gary Manning
We have been preparing for the students' mock interview. The students received some interview questions a couple of weeks ago. This should have helped the students start to formulate answers to questions that they may have to answer during an interview process. Further, we discuss what type of clothes you should wear to an interview, what time you should show up, and what materials you should have with you or not bring to an interview (No cell phones, or ear pods) The mock interview is the students’ final in internship class.
Third-Year Students:
Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier
Students have been looking at different job postings and analyzing them. They are learning to identify the different elements in a job posting such as job responsibilities vs job requirements, salary and benefits information, working conditions, etc.
Internship III: Lisa Garnier
Students will conclude their Fall 2023 internships on November 29th. Internships are being planned for the Spring 2023 semester.
