Director Notes:
First-Year families. In the next few weeks, the students will have their first job shadow opportunity. For these job shadows, students will need to dress appropriately for the job shadows in casual dress. If you’d make sure your student has appropriate clothing on campus for them to wear. If you have any questions please give Dr. Manning an email and he can help you with this.
All families: The last week of February (2/26- 3/1), we will be having our Second set of Family Interviews for next year’s possible cohort. We have tried to make sure we have as many classes as we can but some classes will not meet. The teachers will have alternative homework assignments that they can do on their own. It’s suggested that they meet in small groups during their normal class times in the library, Collaboration Zone, etc. This will help them stay on track and get the homework done that is assigned.
Housing Agreements for Fall 2024: Hello Families, If you’d work with your students to fill out the Fall Housing Agreement. They are located on your student’s MyCentral Page. It’s on the left side towards the middle I believe. I’ll also be sending an email to families about giving us a Letter of Intent for next year. This helps us prepare for students.
I love it when past students are still showing us their cooking skills.
First-Year Students:
Foods & Nutrition I: Debra Southard
This week we learned about the functions of ingredients in recipes. Students made monkey bread. Everyone did a great job and cleaned up well. Friday everyone pre-measured the dry ingredients for funnel cakes. We discussed basically the same recipe for funnel cakes that could be used for pancakes or waffles. I can tell students are gaining confidence in the kitchen.
Getting ready for Funnel Cakes…
Workplace & Community Skills: Gary Manning
This week we did a couple of different topics. The students needed to update their resumes and submit the resumes. We are hoping all students will apply for summer jobs.
Another item we started to discuss is monthly budgets. We discussed wants and needs. The students had to submit a monthly budget but they only had around $2,000 they could use for their budget.
Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS): Joni Shelton
We continued our discussion of Healthy Habits for Daily Living this past week with information about Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco. We discussed what various substances do to the mind and body, and the importance of avoiding these substances for overall health and wellness.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning II: Gary Manning
We continue to discuss working with Vocational Rehab and other agencies to help find jobs/summer jobs. Further, we continue to discuss the next process/challenge in their lives with graduation coming up in May. We continue to discuss budgets. Comparing their revenue to their expenses.
Studying between classes…
Foods and Nutrition II: Lisa
We reviewed how to use cookbooks, what information they contain, and how they are organized. We also did a presentation on fire safety in the kitchen. Students learned that grease fires are the number one cause of kitchen fires, and they learned the proper way to extinguish such a fire. They also learned that it’s okay to just run out of the house and call 911. The differences between types of fire extinguishers were also covered. UPCOMING: Mini Quesadillas in the kitchen!
Internship I: Gary Manning
The students are updating their resumes and working with the UCM Career Service Office on their resumes this week and next week. The students also have to write about their internships. They have to write about what they have learned at their internship and what is challenging for them at their internship.
