THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

First-Year families.  In the next few weeks, the students will have their first job shadow opportunity.  For these job shadows, students will need to dress appropriately for the job shadows in casual dress.  If you’d make sure your student has appropriate clothing on campus for them to wear.  If you have any questions please give Dr. Manning an email and he can help you with this.

All families: The last week of February (2/26- 3/1), we will be having our Second set of Family Interviews for next year’s possible cohort.  We have tried to make sure we have as many classes as we can but some classes will not meet.  The teachers will have alternative homework assignments that they can do on their own.  It’s suggested that they meet in small groups during their normal class times in the library, Collaboration Zone, etc.  This will help them stay on track and get the homework done that is assigned.

MId-term week:  This is midterm week.  Students may have exams, papers, or other projects that they will be studying for.

Housing Agreements for Fall 2024:  Hello Families, If you’d work with your students to fill out the Fall Housing Agreement.  They are located on your student’s MyCentral Page.  It’s on the left side towards the middle I believe.  I’ll also be sending an email to families about giving us a Letter of Intent for next year.  This helps us prepare for students.

Please make sure your student has filled out the Spring Break- When are you leaving… form.  This helps us know when students are leaving for break.  Students were asked to fill this out last week.  Reminder to bring back charging cables, ball gloves, and nice attire for the THRIVE Formal -Scheduled for March 13th from 6-8.

First-Year Students:

Things are going well in food class. We made funnel cakes this week. The review for the mid-term test is open for students to work on. Friday we discussed how to make blueberry muffins and how we could change the recipe to include other ingredients besides blueberries. We also talked about what makes a quick bread and how it is different from rolls.

Workplace & Community Skills: Gary Manning

The students will be starting their 1st job shadow next week.  We have discussed how the students need to act and how to dress for their job shadows.  The students will do two more job shadows this semester.

We also discussed problem-solving skills and how many decisions/problems the students have to do every day.

Daily & Independent Living Skills (DILS):  Joni Shelton

This past week was spent reviewing hygiene and cleanliness habits and discussing mental health. We focused on stress, anxiety, depression, and grief. We shared coping methods and practiced breathing techniques. We also began a study guide for this week's midterm exam.

Students made mini quesadillas and they turned out fantastic! I am very proud of how well they worked together in the kitchen.

Internship I: Gary Manning

The students did a workshop at the UCM Career Service Office.  This partnership that we developed with each other has benefited our students.  The students will begin utilizing the resources at the Career Service Office.  Those resources include interview skills, resume building, mock interviews, and professional dress attire. We appreciate Sydney and Jessicahosting these workshops for us.
