THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar. Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.
Director Notes:
It looks like we have enough students signed up for Softball, Sand Volleyball, and Singles Tennis. But, we are still waiting for more on Disc Golf. We wanted to remind the families that if you hear something from your son/daughter that concerns you please let your student’s teacher know. Mrs. Southard for First-Year students, Dr. Manning for Second-Year students, and Mrs. Garnier for 3rd and 4th Year students. We have had several conversations with the students about who to go to in the dorms and during the day. It can take some time to get everyone to understand where to go for assistance.
Also, for 2nd and 3rd-year families. Since they are working on their independence please let them get to class on their own and have less conversations about what they need to do. Sometimes it’s a good experience to have to be late to class or internship. We’ve all had those days. We know they can do it but it will take practice.
Lots more pictures on Facebook. If you haven’t joined our page, please go to THRIVE - UCM and you can see more of what our students are doing. Families don’t forget to ask if your son/daughter has signed up for intramural sports. We have five that we’ve posted on our lobby wall. They have until September 6th for three of them and until September 13th on the other two. We’ll have more up in October…
First-Year Students:
University Foundations: Debra Southard
This week we finished chapter 1 on taking the big step to college. We talked about what to expect from instructors and what instructors expect from students. We had some homework. A few students struggle with turning work in on time. We are working on writing skills telling the students to work on expanding, explaining, and elaborating their work. Many students forget to put their name and title of the assignment on the work. But we are working on improving.
Individual Relationships and Health: Joni Shelton
This week we talked about dating stages, dating behaviors, and a wide variety of dating situations. We had a presentation about sex from Crissy Hall, a UCM Health Center nurse which led to talking about safe and healthy dating and relationships. We also talked about how our values influence our decisions, especially in regard to dating and relationships.
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
Students are continuing to learn more about the technology they will use on campus. We went over Notability, we had to order a few new iPads that were old, so one student doesn’t have a working machine. We hope it comes in soon.
Career Exploration: Gary Manning
This week they will look over their results of the Career Cluster and go more in-depth into the top 6 clusters, what else will they find that might interest them? They will find 2-3 other jobs/careers that might interest them in each of their top clusters. This will help them find other backup plans that might be viable options for them. The students will have to start researching careers/jobs.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
We are discussing getting outside our comfort zones and trying new things. This is hard for some of us as individuals. We like being secure and comfortable. We have had a student try out for the talent show on campus and we have another student going to run the color run on campus. Further, we are discussing things we cannot control and why we let these things bother us. We can control our attitude and how we try our best but we cannot control what other individuals do.
Internship I: Gary Manning
The students are working on career/job research.
The student will need to research a particular career they would want to do. The student needs to be realistic about their career. As the student researches a career, the student needs to answer these questions:
1) What is the Career?
2) What education/certification will you need to do this career?
3) What is the salary for this career?
4) What other jobs can you do in this profession?
5) Why did you choose this career?
6) What are you doing to help you reach this goal?
7) Can you do this career in your hometown or will you need to move?
8) Is this a career you want to do for the next 10-15 years? Are you going to be happy?
9) Is this career realistic for you?
Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs. Southard
This week we practiced some cutting skills. All students did well. Friday we went to Grindstead and made quesadillas. Students and THRIVE staff appreciate the use of the industrial kitchens thanks to Chef Karen.
