THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar. Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.
Director Notes:
It looks like we have enough students signed up for Softball, Sand Volleyball, and Singles Tennis. But, we are still waiting for more on Disc Golf. We wanted to remind the families that if you hear something from your son/daughter that concerns you please let your student’s teacher know. Mrs. Southard for First-Year students, Dr. Manning for Second-Year students, and Mrs. Garnier for 3rd and 4th Year students. We have had several conversations with the students about who to go to in the dorms and during the day. It can take some time to get everyone to understand where to go for assistance.
Also, for 2nd and 3rd-year families. Since they are working on their independence please let them get to class on their own and have fewer conversations about what they need to do. Sometimes it’s a good experience to have to be late to class or internship. We’ve all had those days. We know they can do it but it will take practice.
Lots more pictures on Facebook. If you haven’t joined our page, please go to THRIVE - UCM and you can see more of what our students are doing. Families don’t forget to ask if your son/daughter has signed up for intramural sports. We have five that we’ve posted on our lobby wall. They have until September 6th for three of them and until September 13th for the other two. We’ll have more up in October…
First-Year Students:
Just watching the movies…
University Foundations: Debra Southard Monday was Labor Day. Tuesday we had Heather Jennings, the Deputy Title IX Coordinator talk to us about some sensitive topics. This week we also took a walking field trip over to Todd Dining Hall. Friday Beth Rutt, Director of Students Activities spoke to us about the many clubs and activities on campus.
Individual Relationships and Health: Joni Shelton This week we focused on Communication Skills, focusing primarily on our listening skills and non-verbal communication. We did a couple of activities that involved listening and following verbal instructions. We also finished up a lesson on the importance of sleep, as students kept a sleep journal for the past week and then reflected on their sleep for the week and their assignment is to create a SMART goal to improve their sleep habits. Next week we will be discussing responsible dating as our relationship discussions continue.
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
This week we made class files in students’ Google Drives and learned how to upload documents to Google Drive and put them in the appropriate class folders. We talked about saving documents on their computers and in their Google drives to make sure they can be easily found. We got Notability up and running on their iPads and learned how to import documents to the app and learned the different features for note-taking and recording notes. Students also learned how to create new documents in Word and Google documents.
Career Exploration: Gary Manning
We started to discuss goals and what the student may be interested in. The students are working on the Missouri Connection. The first assignment in Missouri Connect was an interest profile. This gives the students and THRIVE staff an idea of what the student is interested in and what the student may want to pursue in classes
Looks like the Chief's watch party at the Union was a hit.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
This week the students had Title VII training and we started discussing the 7 Habits book. The first part of the book discusses different paradigms and relationships. We discussed that not everyone is the same and that proper communication is very important when you are having a conversation with your supervisors, instructors, and family.
Internship I: Gary Manning
Internships are going very well. Supervisors are very pleased with the student's work ethic and their soft skills. However, we still need to work on not having their cell phones out during internship times. As for hard skills we are still working on these skills. Hard skills are harder to learn and take time. Some of the hard skills that students are learning are to operate equipment, use technology, and customer service skills.
Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs. Southard
This week we are discussing knife skills and the many cuts that can be created. We practiced on play-doh. And went over cooking terms. Students learned last week that just because a book is in the nutrition section of the library does not mean it is a cookbook.
Third-Year Students:
Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier
This week students attended a Title IX presentation from public safety and completed their 168 hours time analysis where they tracked everything they did for a week (168 hours). We also began our first unit in the Designing Your Life book.
Internship III: Lisa Garnier
Internships are going well.
Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier
This week was spent in the classroom learning about vegetables, their nutrients, how to prepare them, and how to store them. We also learned about different types of salads.
Plato: Debra Southard
Students are in the process of emailing some special topics they would be interested in switching from the Career Exploration and Exercise Science to something they have selected. Students did an EXCELLENT job completing plato last week!

The mentor activity this past week had the students get involved in the “Get the Red Out” street fair. We always have this before our first game. We try to get the students excited about the game and activities…
