10/21... sorry a little late this week.

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

Spring Class Enrollment is coming soon.  The Students have shared with staff their top 5 choices for their elective for the Spring Semester.  It would be good to talk to your son/daughter, if you haven’t already done so, to see what they are interested in.  THRIVE staff will then go over their choices and see how it fits in their Person-Centered Plan (Interests or career goals).  They will also see if their are any conflicts between THRIVE classes and if they have any prerequisites that would not let them take the classes.  Then THRIVE staff will talk to the students once a final decision is made.  They are one of the first groups able to enroll.

THRIVE staff are working on the Midterm reports that we will send to both the students and parents about their progress.  We would typically send these reports out by email the following week, this year, however, we have a Fall Break that is from October 17th through the 20th.  So students will not have classes on Thursday the 17th or Friday the 18th.  We will plan on getting the reports out by the 21st.

Homecoming week is October 21st-27th.  During this week there are various activities around campus.  The students will be assisting with making the Float, Spirit Window, Blood Drive (if wanted), and other activities.  There is a parade that students participate in on Saturday the 26th in the morning.  Then there is the game against Washburn in the early afternoon.  We’d highly recommend that if you are looking at coming to campus this would be a great time.  The whole community comes out for the Homecoming Parade and festivities.

First-Year Students:

Learning Strategies: Debra Southard

This week is a short week. University Foundations class ended at eight weeks. Now the class has switched to Learning Strategies. Monday was an open house. Students received the textbook for this class. We also discussed two assignments. We talked about their vision for their future. And what students see for their future. The difference between a goal and a vision for the future was discussed.

Individual Relationships and Health:  Joni Shelton

We have continued our dating discussions with what a dangerous relationship looks like and ending a dating relationship. Students worked in groups and presented 10 Warning Signs that a dating relationship is dangerous.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

Students spent time studying for midterms and doing homework.

Career Exploration: Gary Manning

This week the students will look at their past volunteer or job experiences.  I will ask them to have a printout of any past resumes and if not, talk to parents over the weekend to get information on what experiences they have had, starting dates, ending dates, and others.  It will be important to talk to your students during this week to help them get information in an email about what they have done so they can work on this during the next week.

Second-Year Students:

A little reviewing going on…

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

We are talking about listening to each other and what type of listening skills we need to utilize when listening. Further we are discussing body language and how your body language can tell another person a lot about you.

Internship I: Gary Manning

The students continue to work on resumes.  The resumes have good information on them but the students need to fine-tune the resumes.  We will work on that during class time and weekly meetings.

The students are submitting internships they may want to do in the spring semester.  The student needs to submit five locations for their internship and give reasons why they want to do their internship at this location.  I have suggested to the students to discuss these internships with their families.

Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs. Southard

Students were assigned to get together on Tuesday and go over the steps in the recipe. Students were to email me a picture of them meeting and working. Wednesday we went to Grindstead and made our second attempt on potato skins. There were better this time!

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier

Students worked on Good Time Journals where they logged activities such as classes, meetings, free time, etc. They rated their levels of engagement and energy during these everyday activities and are now evaluating what things gave them energy and motivation and what things were a drain on their energy. The hope is to help them balance high-energy/enjoyment activities and low-energy/draining activities to help make the less enjoyable but necessary activities more bearable.

Internship III: Lisa Garnier

Students are working well in their internships with good supervisor reviews.

Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier

Students are working on meal planning. They have a list of 12 ingredients and a price limit. They are to list the best prices of ingredients and then find 4 different recipes they can make using the ingredients on their list. The idea is to learn how to make multiple recipes with the same ingredients.

Plato: Debra Southard:

Plato is going well. I would like to see them slow down and work on increasing their mastery.

It’s time for Homecoming weekend.  The mentors will be bringing the students to the Multi early Saturday morning to get ready for the parade, and then after the parade is the Football game…
