THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar. Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.
Director Notes:
Spring Class Enrollment is here…. The Students have shared with staff their top 5 choices for their elective for the Spring Semester, and most of the students have been enrolled. It would be good to talk to your son/daughter, if you haven’t already done so, to see what they are interested in. THRIVE staff go over their choices and see how they fit in their Person-Centered Plan (Interests or career goals). They also see if there are any conflicts between THRIVE classes and if they have any prerequisites that would not let them take the classes. Then THRIVE staff talk to the students once a final decision is made. They are one of the first groups able to enroll. Please check your student’s account to make sure there are no “holds” on their accounts. This will allow us to get them enrolled earlier and hopefully, they get their choice of classes.
Spring Roommates: Hello Families, we also, just like other UCM students, allow students to ask to change roommates, within the THRIVE program. I’ve sent out a Google form to each of the 1st- and 2nd-year students. In it they are asked if they want to change roommates or stay the same. Then to give their top 5 choices. They don’t have to change… Some years we only have a couple that want to move, some years we have had more… just depends. We want them to fill out the form by Friday. Then THRIVE staff will look at the results and work on roommate options for the Spring. The week before Thanksgiving Break, we will let the students know if they were changed or not and what roommates they will have. Then each student will be asked to get with the new roommate to see if they have duplicate items (Mini-Fridge, TV, Microwave, etc). This will help students move things home that they don’t need. Then the week they get back from Thanksgiving break THRIVE staff and Mentors will help them move. I’ll work out a system so that typically Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday some of the students move and we are done by Thursday. This way they are in the room they will be at in the Spring semester.
First-Year Students:

This week we worked on some assignments. Students were to compare their life to a metaphor. They completed index cards wrote the words and definitions and worked on a Canva assignment.

This week we finished up our discussion of dating and love vs. infatuation. Then we shifted gears, once again, back to Health topics. The rest of the week and next we are discussing Healthy Eating habits. Students will be tracking their food intake for 7 days, review their eating habits, and create a SMART Goal to improve their eating habits.

Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
Unfortunately, I was out most of last week due to illness. The students had study time and a couple of class cancellations.
Career Exploration: Gary Manning
The student will need to start thinking about their resume. Over the next few weeks, they will work on different parts of their resume. We discussed the goals they have and the goals their families may have for them.
Second-Year Students:
Hanging out…
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
We have been discussing a lot about relationships and how to communicate in a relationship. A relationship can be with your family, friends, roommates, boyfriend/girlfriend, classmates, and co-workers. Each relationship will be different and how you may communicate within that relationship. The students are working on being a self-advocate within a relationship but doing this self-advocacy in a respectful manner. Further, we are discussing body language and how your body language can tell another person a lot about you.
Internship I: Gary Manning
We are working on resumes and cover letters. The students are turning in their rough draft this week. Further, the students continue to discuss internships for the spring semester. By the time semester ends the students should know where their spring internship will be.
Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs. Southard
We had a tough assignment! We participated in a brownie taste-off. Comparing which was from scratch, from a box and one was gluten-free. We then made brownies in Grinstead from scratch.
Third-Year Students:
Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier
We began working on analyzing our good time journals to see what things we really enjoy and what things we don’t. Students are looking for the small things and the big things that bring them satisfaction in an effort to learn to balance the good stuff and the not-so-good stuff we have to deal with in real life.
Internship III: Lisa Garnier
All internships are going well.
Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier
Due to my being ill this week, we have only reviewed the next recipe we will be making in the kitchen next week.
