THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  Please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or the UCM activity calendar to keep updated on what's coming up.  Also, if you want to learn more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive, please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes: This will be the last Blog for the year.  Enjoy…

Moving day is coming soon… Hello families, all students have shared with me their confirmation of checkout.  This checkout time is when the room needs to be completely cleaned and everything out.  It should look like it did when they came in August. An email went out to families from me on a couple of weeks ago to help explain more about the process.  If they haven’t talked to you about their scheduled time, please contact me as soon as possible.

Graduation: Is coming up fast.  What a great time of year!

Parents, please make sure you finish filling out the form to let Mr. B know how many of your family will be coming to Graduation.

All Families:  During Finals week, it’s quiet hour all day…  so that those that still have finals have a quiet time to study.

Another great time in THRIVE…  We are now a 4-year CTP as well as a 2-year CTP.  We will have more in the coming weeks as we work on getting this going on campus.  You can read more about it at the following link…  https://www.ucmo.edu/news/04-15-25-thrive.php

First-Year Students:

Foods & Nutrition I: Debra Southard

On Monday, everyone made cookies. Each group had a different chip. We had chocolate chips, white chocolate, butterscotch, peanut butter, M&M’s, and one that was chocolate with peanut butter in the chips. Wednesday was Founders Day, so all students went. Friday, we had a two-hour class. The first hour, we reviewed for the final. The second hour, we met over in Grinstead for the last time and did some cleaning.

Workplace & Community Skills: Gary Manning & Mrs. Southard

The students finished their mock interviews this week.  We also discussed their fall internships.  The students will be receiving an email in the first part of August about their fall internships, so please make sure the students are checking their emails.

Daily Independent Living Skills - Joni Shelton

We ended our semester with cleaning, laundry, and safe cooking and food storage lessons. We completed a Nearpod lesson and a powerpoint presentation with tips, techniques, and tools for each. I provided students with charts for food storage in the refrigerator and freezer, and a house cleaning checklist. I have encouraged the students to practice these skills over the summer while they are at home. I will be excited to hear how they did when we meet up again in August. I have enjoyed getting to know each of the students this year, and I look forward to working with them next year.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning II: Gary Manning

This was the last week of classes.  There was a lot of happiness and sadness among the students.  They have been in this program for two years, making relationships, doing activities together, and attending classes.  There has been a lot of growth for each student.  However, as we discuss in class, everyone will continue to grow, learn, and experience new things throughout our lives.  I am very proud of each one of these students for their development and learning.

Internship I: Gary Manning

The students will be leaving their internships this week and next week.  The students have grown in a lot of ways during their internships.  At times, the students struggle,d but they learned from those struggles.  All the internship locations have said they will miss their interns and the relationships they have developed with the students.

All students should have access to their professional portfolios.  Within the portfolio the student should have a resume, cover letter, recommendation letter,s and their PDP.

Personal Finance I:  Lisa Garnier

Students finished class with a unit on insurance. They learned the ins and outs of renters' insurance and its importance. We learned what the landlord’s property insurance covers and what renter’s insurance covers, and how renter's and homeowner's insurance differ. We also reviewed for the final exam, which takes place at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7th.

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning IV: Lisa Garnier

Students completed their Wellness Wheel and are working on their Healthier Life: Step-by-Step Guide to Wellness. I think it’s important to finish out the semester (and send some out into the world) with the tools to take care of themselves on all levels to achieve a healthy life balance.

Internship IV: Lisa Garnier

Students are finishing up their internships this week and working on their final paper for the class.
