Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive, please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.
Director Notes:
Wow! Thank you for all the participation this week. Lots of families came down for the festivities and joined in helping our students with our Float for Homecoming. It was great to see everyone.
The students will be choosing their top 5 classes they’d like to take in the spring in the next few weeks. Here are some added items that are discussed. The classes should be 1000- or 2000-level courses or courses with no prerequisites. Then the staff needs to review when our THRIVE classes are scheduled. If classes are at the same time as our THRIVE classes, they won’t be able to take them, but we will keep them in mind for the next semester. We also examine what the student has been discussing as a career and how this class might relate to their interests. Then, the staff reviews their ideas and informs the students before they leave for winter break.
Sign-up sheets have been up… but not as many students are signing up for events. We have Homecoming sign-up sheets out now, and we will have more Rec Leagues in the next week or so.
First-Year Students:
University Foundations: Joni Shelton
We spent this week learning about time management skills. We identified our biggest time wasters/distractions and learned how to utilize calendars and lists to manage our time effectively. We also toured the UCM James C. Kirkpatrick Library and had a presentation by the College of Education librarian on how to use the library. Students are encouraged to use the library not only for books and other media, but also for study rooms and areas, as well as the activities available, such as community puzzles and games. Our students then embarked on a goose chase, exploring some of the library's features. I really enjoyed seeing them get excited about the library.
Individual Relationships and Health: Sandra Swainston
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
This week, students learned how to make slide presentations using Google Slides and Microsoft PowerPoint. They created slide shows about themselves, which they will present to the class next week.
Career Exploration: Gary Manning
This week, we discussed the students' talents and how those talents may go along with what the students may be interested in doing for a career. We also discussed picking five elective classes for the spring semester. The student needs to have their classes submitted by Oct. 5th. The student will only take one elective class in the spring semester.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
This week, we discussed RBAs and PBAs from the 7 Habits book. Within that discussion, we talked about withdrawals and deposits into a relationship. Withdrawals and deposits can be made from a relationship bank account or a personal bank account. At first, the students think we are talking about an actual bank account you have at the bank. However, as I explain the concepts to them and we discuss these accounts in further detail, the students start to realize this has nothing to do with money but with how you treat yourself and other individuals around you.
We also discussed picking five elective classes for the spring semester. The student needs to have their classes submitted by Oct. 5th. The student will only take one or two elective classes in the spring semester.
Internship I: Gary Manning
In class, we continue discussing when you have a job, how organized you will need to be. Further, we talk about time management and have a plan for the day, week, and month. We discuss having a planner on how to use the planner to be organized and to make sure you do not overlap meetings, classes, work, and doing school work.
Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs.Shelton
This week, half of the class made Air Fryer Potato Skins on Monday, and the other half made Air Fryer Twice-Baked Potatoes on Wednesday. On Friday, the other half of the class baked potatoes in the air fryer and cooked bacon in the microwave in preparation for making the potato skins and twice-baked potatoes next week.
Third-Year Students:
Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier
Students have completed their workviews and lifeviews and are now starting Good Time Journals. The journals are a weekly record of their activities (work, school, meetings, etc.). They list each thing they do and rate their level of engagement, as well as whether the activity produces positive or negative energy. The purpose is to discover what things bring them joy and excite them, and what things they find boring and/or a drain on their energy. The goal is to assess ways to bring more joy and energy into their lives.
Internship III: Lisa Garnier
The guys are doing great at their internships. We’ve got folks in sports, radio, and broadcasting, so they are very busy right now!
Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier
I introduced the USDA MyPlate website to students this week. We looked at the nutrition information and the recipes. Students are encouraged to take the MyPlate Quiz to see where they can improve their nutritional food intake.
Fourth-Year Students:
Senior Portfolio II:
We are moving into job searching with an emphasis on what it means to be qualified for a job and a review of how to read job descriptions.
Internship:
Internships are going well. Students are very busy.
