10/13 Blog- Fall Break is here...

THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

This week’s posting will be a day late.  We had our Fall Open House on Monday the 13th, so not much time to post…

First, we have first-semester 8-week classes that ended last week on Friday.  So the first year students will have a new schedule, if they had Valuing Differences or Bowling.  Then we’ll have some students that start Bowling this week.

Don’t forget Fall Break is here.  Students will not have classes this Thursday and Friday.  A Google Form was sent out last night to get an update on who is leaving when.  Some dining halls and restaurants on campus will be closed.  THRIVE offices will be open most of the day on Thursday but all campus offices will be closed on Friday.  Progress reports will be emailed out on Friday.

The students will be choosing their top 5 classes they’d like to take in the spring in the next few weeks.  Here are some added items that are discussed.  The classes should be 1000 or 2000 level courses or courses with no prerequisites.  Then staff has to look at when our THRIVE classes are scheduled.  If classes are at the same time as our THRIVE classes, they won’t be able to take them but we will keep them in mind for the next semester.  We also look at what the student has been talking about as a career and how this class might pertain to their interests.  Then staff looks through their ideas and lets the students know before they leave for winter break.

Sign up sheets have been up… but not as many students are signing up for events.  We have Homecoming sign up sheets out now and will have more Rec Leagues in the next week or so.

Some pictures from their Healthy Active Living class…

First-Year Students:

Dr. Manning and Mrs. Shelton had the students try the Rockwall this past week.  Each student was asked to at least try.  There are more pictures on Facebook…

University Foundations: Joni Shelton

We have had a busy week. On Tuesday we went to the Rec Center and tried the Rockwall, and on Thursday we went back to the Rec Center for Archery. We have also been discussing Chapter 4 in the Step by Step textbook. This chapter is about learning and thinking. Students completed the VARK assessment to determine whether they learn best visually, aurally, by reading or through Kinesthetics. Students also practiced study skills and note taking by outlining Chapter 4 using the Chapter 3 Mapping/Outline that I had shared with them as a guide.

Individual Relationships and Health:  Sandra Swainston

Mid term week.  Students are finishing up units on how to identify domestic violence, steps to avoid situations, places to get help.  Care to Act did a 2 day presentation and we watched a video.  It has been a hard topic for many of the students but they are processing the information.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

Students are learning about the accessibility features on their cell phones. They are writing a paper that explains 2 - 3 accessibility features available on iPhone and Android phones. Students with iPhones are writing about features on iPhones, and students with Android phones are writing about features on Android phones. They have been surprised with some of the things their phones can do!

Career Exploration: Gary Manning

In last week's Career Exploration class we went over their last Missouri Connections assessment.  We talked about personalities and what is valued in their lives. This helps them look at another aspect of work.  It’s not just all about the money.  To continue to maintain good employment we like for the students to look at what really matters to them.

Archery on Thursday morning…

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

In class we are discussing Habit 3 - Put First Thing First.  We all procrastinate at times and then we fall behind in our work.  Once we fall behind we may get overwhelmed or very stressed.  Within this chapter it helps us to decide on what we need to get done first and then go down the list to least important items.  I have encouraged the students to use planners, lists and calendars to help them to be organized and responsible.  One of the biggest issues students have is peer pressure and wanting to hangout with friends instead of doing school work.

Internship I: Gary Manning

We are working on resumes and cover letters.  The students are turning in their rough draft this week.  Further, the students continue to discuss internships for the spring semester.  By the time semester ends the students should know where their spring internship will be.

Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs.Shelton

This week we made Taco Salad as part of our unit about Salads. Monday we prepped by cutting up the vegetables to save us time when we cooked the meat, onions and beans, and assembled the salads. This was our first week (this year), in the Professional Kitchens in Grinstead.

A couple of 2nd at their elective class…

Hanging out at the Burgfest… Car Show

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier

We completed our midterm exams and are now working on mind maps. Students are using these brainstorming tools to identify a variety of possible career options in their areas of interest.

Internship III: Lisa Garnier

Mid-term evaluations are coming in, and so far I’m seeing good things!

Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier

We talked about easy meals for college students and basic pantry necessities. We focused on cooking with what’s in the cupboard and what to keep in the cupboard to be ready to cook a variety of meals. Students made Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Casserole in our food lab, too. It was yummy!

Fourth-Year Students:

Senior Portfolio I:

The fourth year is working on job descriptions and monthly budget analysis. The goal is to recognize whether they are qualified for a specific position and to understand how much they will need to make to meet their budget priorities.

Internship:

I’m getting good reports.

Plato: Joni Shelton

Students completed week 7 of Plato Challenges. They will have week 8 to complete before or during Fall Break.
