THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar. Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive, please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.
Director Notes:
The students have chosen their top 5 classes they’d like to take in the spring in the next few weeks. Here are some added items that are discussed. The classes should be 1000 or 2000 level courses or courses with no prerequisites. Then the staff has to look at when our THRIVE classes are scheduled. If classes are at the same time as our THRIVE classes, they won’t be able to take them, but we will keep them in mind for the next semester. We also look at what the student has been talking about as a career and how this class might pertain to their interests. Then the staff looks through their ideas and lets the students know before they leave for winter break.
Students were also given the opportunity to fill out a form on who they want to be roommates with in the Spring semester. They were asked to let us know if they wanted to stay with their current roommate or have a different roommate in the Spring semester. Their choices are limited to current THRIVE first- or second-year students. The staff will look over their choices in the next few weeks, and the week before Thanksgiving break, we will let the students know. Then the students will be able to get with their new roommate, if they have a new roommate, and see what they will need in their new room. We also ask that students clean out their rooms of any clothes or items they don’t need and take them home during Thanksgiving break. The students will need to keep their rooms clean and clear the floors of any items over the break. They will be given instructions the week before. The hope is that they will have their rooms cleaned of any added items so that it is easier for staff/mentors/roommates to move them. Staff tries to do the least amount of moving. Then the week they get back from Thanksgiving break, they will move in with their new roommate, if they chose one. Parents/families aren’t asked to come in for this move. We will move them, and then they will be where they need to be for the Spring Semester.
We will have more information about Finals in the coming weeks to help families prepare for this time.

First-Year Students:
University Foundations: Joni Shelton
A presentation from Career and Life Design Center… While I was at the State of the Art Conference, Mr. B. Derrick Gill from the UCM’s Career and Life Design Center spoke to the class on Monday. The rest of the week, students worked on Chapter 7 of the Step by Step textbook about preparing for and taking exams. Students had guided notes to complete using the textbook. Students also wrote a 2-paragraph reflection of their time here in the THRIVE program, so far.
Individual Relationships and Health: Sandra Swainston
The students seem reenergized after the break and super excited about Homecoming. We are working on the Stages of Relationships and questions to ask to make sure it is a healthy relationship. If it isn’t, we are learning techniques to break up. We have had some great discussions this week!
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
Students learned how to create tables and use them in documents. They are doing a Technology Purchase Project where they compare two products of different brands. Part of this short paper is a table that lists the features and prices of both products (Xbox vs. PlayStation, for example). Then, they give a summary of which product they would choose based on their research (this might result in some good arguments for Christmas gifts).
Career Exploration: Gary Manning
The student will need to start thinking about their resume. Over the next few weeks, they will work on different parts of their resume. Next week, we will work on the heading of their resume.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
We continue to discuss the 7 Habits book on Habit 5 - “Think Win-Win”. Within this habit, we discussed the four categories of this habit. Win-Lose; Lose-Win, Lose-Lose; and Win-Win. We try to strive for a Win-Win, where we compromise with each other to help everyone. We as individuals sometimes have a hard time with the Win-Win category. We always think that we need to win, and someone may need to lose.
Internship I: Gary Manning
Last week, we continued to work on budgets and money. The students had a couple of scenarios they had to work through to figure out how much money they are spending, and also how much money they will make if they work so many hours per week, making an hourly wage
Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs.Shelton
On Monday, Lynnlee Parrott, the MU Extension Office Nutrition and Health Specialist spoke to students about Dietary Guidelines. Students worked on assignments reviewing knife skills, choosing nutritious foods, and planning nutritious and appealing menus. On Friday we began discussing nutrients in more detail.
