THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up, please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive, please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

This week’s post is a few days late.  I was at a Conference from Monday the 20th to Wednesday the 23rd.  Dr. Manning and Mrs. Garnier will be on campus.

The students will be choosing their top 5 classes they’d like to take in the spring in the next few weeks.  Here are some added items that are discussed.  The classes should be 1000 or 2000 level courses or courses with no prerequisites.  Then the staff has to look at when our THRIVE classes are scheduled.  If classes are at the same time as our THRIVE classes, they won’t be able to take them, but we will keep them in mind for the next semester.  We also look at what the student has been talking about as a career and how this class might pertain to their interests.  Then the staff looks through their ideas and lets the students know before they leave for winter break.

Don't forget with have Homecoming this week and a parade that starts at 9 Saturday morning and a football game that afternoon.  We hope you come and enjoy the festivities.

We had our Fall Open House this past week.  Great turnout…

First-Year Students:

University Foundations: Joni Shelton

We finished up our chapter on Learning and Thinking with a quiz on Wednesday. Students prepared for the quiz by using guided notes of the class presentation and by creating an outline of the chapter. I believe everyone was ready for a much-needed break. I will be at a conference Oct. 20 - 22, but I look forward to seeing our students on Oct. 23.

Individual Relationships and Health:  Sandra Swainston

We reviewed expectations for the second half of the semester and discussed what all of us could do together to make it the most successful half of the semester.  We will start focusing on dating and how relationships grow and mature.  We will also concentrate on identifying healthy and unhealthy relationships.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

This week, we worked on our Accessibility Features paper and had a class discussion on how to communicate appropriately and effectively in text messages, group chats, emails, and face-to-face. The students were open and attentive, and they learned a lot.

Career Exploration: Gary Manning

Last week, the students discussed some of what they learned from their last assessment of this semester from Missouri Connections.  The hope is that the students have been able to find other job possibilities and interests.  They will also start to think about their resume.  Over the next few weeks, they will work on different parts of their resume to add to their portfolio.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

We have been discussing a lot about relationships and how to communicate in a relationship.  A relationship can be with your family, friends, roommates, boyfriend/girlfriend, classmates, and co-workers.  Each relationship will be different, and how you communicate within that relationship.  The students are working on being a self-advocate within a relationship but doing this self-advocacy in a respectful manner.

Internship I: Gary Manning

We are working on resumes and cover letters.  The students are turning in their rough drafts this week.  Further, the students continue to discuss internships for the spring semester.  By the time the semester ends, the students should know where their spring internship will be.

Some working at KMOS this morning…

Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs.Shelton

We began our unit on planning nutritious meals for the family. We are focusing on the 6 key nutrients, 5 food groups, 10 dietary guidelines, and the things that make food appealing, such as color, texture, temperature, flavor, and shape.

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier

This was a short week due to Fall Break, but we did work on mind maps (brainstorming job ideas within career fields) and started on Odyssey Plans. Odyssey plans are visual/graphic 5-year plans that include career and non-career goals. Students are creating three different 5-year plans that include a plan for their current life or the idea they are pursuing now, a plan that is what they would do if the first thing were suddenly gone, and a plan that is the thing they would do/life they would live if money were no object.

Internship III: Lisa Garnier

All is going well!

Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier

We only met once. We looked at how to make sandwiches (I know, it seems silly). Students learned that a sandwich can be very healthy as long as the right ingredients are used. One big topic of discussion was vegetables besides lettuce and tomato that can go in a sandwich to make it a healthier choice.

Fourth-Year Students:

Senior Portfolio I:

No class due to Open House

Internship:

A lot is being learned about real-world job expectations

Plato: Joni Shelton

Students were required to complete Plato minutes this past week, even with Fall break. We have 5 more weeks of Plato work. We will be finishing up the week before Thanksgiving break.
