THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

The students have chosen their top 5 classes they’d like to take in the spring.

We informed the students of their new roommate assignments on Monday. If they move, then on Monday, when they return from Thanksgiving break, the staff will relocate them.  Previously, the students were given the opportunity to fill out a form on who they wanted to be roommates with in the Spring semester.  Then, the students will be able to meet their new roommate, if they have one, and see what they will need in their new room.  We also ask that students clean out their rooms of any clothes or items they don’t need and take them home during Thanksgiving break.  The students will have to keep their rooms clean and nothing on the floors.  They will be given instructions the week before.  The hope is that they will have their rooms cleaned of any added items so that it is easier for staff/mentors/roommates to move them.  Staff try to do the least amount of moving.

We will have more information about Finals in the coming weeks to help families prepare for this time.  Remember that first-year students will take their finals from December 1st through 5th and will leave the afternoon of the 5th for the semester.  All students should know when their finals are to help with families' decisions on when to pick them up for winter break. I believe 1 pm is their last final, so they should be ready for pick by 2:30ish.

Second-, Third-, and fourth-year students will take their finals December 8th through the 12th.  These parents will want to get with their students to see when their last Final and last scheduled time to work in their internships is.  We like for students to leave after their last final/internship so that the hall is quieter for the students that are still studying…

First-Year Students:

Learning Strategies: Joni Shelton

This week in Learning Strategies, they have been going through good note-taking skills.  This also includes using Notability on their iPads.

Individual Relationships and Health:  Sandra Swainston

We are working on the costs of children at each developmental stage. We are going to revisit the differences between teens mentally and emotionally as they relate to relationships.  There are only two more weeks until Thanksgiving, then the first-year finals for this class will be on Friday, the 5th of December.  I am giving them class time to work on a couple of major projects they have upcoming.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

We uploaded Notability to the students’ iPads. They continue to work on their iMovies.

Career Exploration: Gary Manning

This week, the students had a work day to get support on their resumes to help them get finished up and ready for the families to look at and review over Thanksgiving break.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

They are supposed to practice their interviewing skills over the break with their families.  They have the questions for the interview, so they can practice their answers.

Internship I: Gary Manning

The students are in the process of finishing up their internships this semester.  Each student will finish up on different days.  This will depend on when the student is leaving campus for the semester break and on their particular internship.  The expectation is that the students work during finals week if their particular internship is still open.  Some locations will be closing down over the next couple of weeks for the semester break.

Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs.Shelton

Students made mashed potatoes last week, viewed a presentation, and did an assignment about meats, focusing primarily on beef. On Friday, students viewed a presentation about proper table setting, etiquette, and manners, and completed assignments about these topics.

Here is a picture from the class…  Getting ready.

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier

Continued work on prototype interviews, resume updates, and professional development plans.

Internship III: Lisa Garnier

Things are going very well.

Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier

Students are about to begin their final project for the Foods class. They are planning an entire holiday meal. They aren’t cooking it, just planning it, finding recipes, creating a shopping list with comparison prices, and creating a holiday meal menu.

Senior Portfolio I:

Working on the final assignments for the semester.

Internship:

Plato: Joni Shelton

Students will have their last week of plato this week.
