THRIVE Director Notes

Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program.  Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred.  To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.

Director Notes:

The students have chosen their top 5 classes they’d like to take in the spring in the next few weeks.  Here are some added items that are discussed.  The classes should be 1000 or 2000 level courses or courses with no prerequisites.  Then staff has to look at when our THRIVE classes are scheduled.  If classes are at the same time as our THRIVE classes, they won’t be able to take them but we will keep them in mind for the next semester.  We also look at what the student has been talking about as a career and how this class might pertain to their interests.  Then staff looks through their ideas and lets the students know before they leave for winter break.

Students were also given the opportunity to fill out a form on who they want to be roommates with in the Spring semester.  They were asked to let us know if they wanted to stay with their current roommate or have a different roommate in the Spring semester.  Their choices are limited to current THRIVE first- or second-year students.  The staff will look over their choices in the next few weeks and the week before Thanksgiving break we will let the students know.  Then the students will be able to get with their new roommate, if they have a new roommate, and see what they will need in their new room.  We also ask that students clean out their room of any clothes or items they don’t need and take them home during Thanksgiving break.  The students will have to have their rooms clean and nothing on the floors over the break.  They will be given instructions the week before.  The hope is that they will have their rooms cleaned of any added items so that it is easier for staff/mentors/roommates to move them.  Staff tries to do the least amount of moving.  Then the week they get back from Thanksgiving break, they will move in with their new roommate, if they chose.  Parents/families aren’t asked to come in for this move.  We will move them and then they will be where they need to be for Spring Semester.

We will have more information about Finals in the coming weeks to help families prepare for this time.  Remember that first year students will take their finals December 1st through 5th and will leave the afternoon of the 5th for the semester.

Second-, Third-, and fourth-year students will take their finals December 8th through the 12th.  These parents will want to get with their students to see when their last Final and last scheduled time to work in their internships is.  We like for students to leave after their last final/internship so that the hall is quieter for the students that are still studying…

First-Year Students:

University Foundations: Joni Shelton

No information this week.  We will update next week.

Individual Relationships and Health:  Sandra Swainston

This week we have explored the birthing process from conception to birth.  We are discussing possible difficulties encountered during pregnancy as well as the expenses involved with childbirth and rearing.  The students have had some great questions and there have been good discussions.  Next up we will be child developmental stages and safety.

Technology Literacy:  Lisa Garnier

Students are excitedly planning and creating their iMovie trailers. They are working on them in class and independently. This is always a fun final project, and I always look forward to seeing their creations.

Career Exploration: Gary Manning

The students continue working on their resume.  This week we worked on their education experience, activities, and skills.  We also did a few scenarios that may take place in the workplace.

Second-Year Students:

Transition Planning I: Gary Manning

We finished up the 7 Habits book this week.  We discussed the four dimensions on Habit 7 (Sharpen the Saw).  Those four dimensions are body, mind, heart and soul.  Each dimension plays a key factor in how you work through stressful situations, critical thinking and your daily life.

Internship I: Gary Manning

This week in class we started discussing interview skills and questions you may be asked during an interview.  Mrs. Shleton interviewed Dr. Manning in front of the class.  One of the interviews was an unprofessional interview and Dr. Manning did everything wrong during the interview.  The second interview was a professional interview, utilizing professional dress and communication skills.  The students will do their mock interview as part of their final in internship class.

Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs.Shelton

The foods class made a couple of different things over the last week.  We’ll let the pictures show what they did…

Great Salad…

Mashed potatoes in the next class…

Great Sculpture work, Rachel.

Third-Year Students:

Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier

Students are working on their final projects and assignments for the semester. They are doing interviews with people working in their field of interest, creating professional development plans, and updating their resumes.

Internship III: Lisa Garnier

Students are learning a great deal about working in the real world and proper workplace etiquette. Things are going well.

Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier

This group is fantastic! We made creamy potato and ham soup this week. The students learned how to make a roux (a mixture of butter & flour cooked for several minutes and added to the soup as a thickener). The roux adds a delicious creaminess to the soup, and it was delicious!

Fourth-Year Students:

Senior Portfolio I:

Work continues on networking interviews, resume updates, and other final assignments

Internship:

Students are learning a great deal about working in the real world and proper workplace etiquette. Things are going well.
