THRIVE Director Notes
Posts on this Blog will be directed to help families see what is going on in our THRIVE Program. Items discussed on the Blog have already occurred. To keep updated on what’s coming up please refer to the THRIVE activity calendar or UCM activity calendar. Also, if you are interested in learning more about assistance with your son/daughter learning how to drive please contact Mr. Brunkhorst.
Director Notes:
The students have chosen their top 5 classes they’d like to take in the spring in the next few weeks. Here are some added items that are discussed. The classes should be 1000 or 2000 level courses or courses with no prerequisites. Then staff has to look at when our THRIVE classes are scheduled. If classes are at the same time as our THRIVE classes, they won’t be able to take them but we will keep them in mind for the next semester. We also look at what the student has been talking about as a career and how this class might pertain to their interests. Then staff looks through their ideas and lets the students know before they leave for winter break.
Students were also given the opportunity to fill out a form on who they want to be roommates with in the Spring semester. They were asked to let us know if they wanted to stay with their current roommate or have a different roommate in the Spring semester. Their choices are limited to current THRIVE first- or second-year students. The staff will look over their choices in the next few weeks and the week before Thanksgiving break we will let the students know. Then the students will be able to get with their new roommate, if they have a new roommate, and see what they will need in their new room. We also ask that students clean out their room of any clothes or items they don’t need and take them home during Thanksgiving break. The students will have to have their rooms clean and nothing on the floors over the break. They will be given instructions the week before. The hope is that they will have their rooms cleaned of any added items so that it is easier for staff/mentors/roommates to move them. Staff tries to do the least amount of moving. Then the week they get back from Thanksgiving break, they will move in with their new roommate, if they chose. Parents/families aren’t asked to come in for this move. We will move them and then they will be where they need to be for Spring Semester.
We will have more information about Finals in the coming weeks to help families prepare for this time. Reminder that first year students will take their finals December 1st through 5th and will leave the afternoon of the 5th for the semester.
Second-, Third-, and fourth-year students will take their finals December 8th through the 12th. These parents will want to get with their students to see when their last Final and last scheduled time to work in their internships is. We like for students to leave after their last final/internship so that the hall is quieter for the students that are still studying…
First-Year Students:
University Foundations: Joni Shelton
This past week, we finished our University Foundations class and switched over to Learning Strategies. Same time, same place, different textbook, different class title, and different Brightspace class. We finished our chapter about preparing for and taking exams by taking the University Foundations Final Exam. We are starting our Learning Strategies class with a chapter about setting goals. Students were asked to think about, and some shared with the class, what their vision is and what some of their goals are.
Individual Relationships and Health: Sandra Swainston
This week, we studied engagement/marriage and breaking up. We talked about the male and female reproductive systems and health-related topics. We will start talking about pregnancy and the stages of fetal development.
Technology Literacy: Lisa Garnier
Students learned how to care for their computers. They discussed how to clean keyboards, screens, and exteriors properly to keep devices functioning at their optimal capacity. We also began discussing how to make an iMovie. For their final projects, students will work in pairs to make their own unique iMovie Trailer.
Career Exploration: Gary Manning
The students are working on their resumes. This week we worked on their name, address, email address, and cell number. Next week, we will be working on education. We also did a few scenarios that may take place in the workplace.
Second-Year Students:
Transition Planning I: Gary Manning
We finished up the 7 Habits book this week over the next week. This week we discussed Habit 6 “Synergy”. Getting along with others, communication skills, and cooperation.
We have also been working on budgeting/money skills.
Internship I: Gary Manning
The students will have their first mock interview during finals week. The students will need to dress professionally, act professional, and communicate in a professional way. Further, the students will need to bring in a professional resume and be prepared for the interview. I told the students not to go out and buy new clothes. I am sure the students have clothes within their closets that they can use for professional dress.
The students' internships will be done during the week of finals. The students are supposed to coordinate with their supervisor to finalize a date for their last day.
Will at his internship at KMOS…
Foods & Nutrition II: Mrs.Shelton
This week has been all about eating nutritious foods, focusing on Fruits. Students sampled some lesser-known fruits such as Papaya, Guava, Cactus Pear, Dragon Fruit, Mango, and Dracula Pink Cara Cara from Australia. We are ending our Fruit unit by making fruit salad.

Third-Year Students:
Transition Planning III: Lisa Garnier
Students are working on their prototyping assignment. This process involves interviewing someone who is already working in the career they want to pursue. They have a list of questions to ask to get an idea of what it’s like to do the job on a day-to-day basis, what education and experience are required, what the good and bad aspects of the job are, and so forth.
Internship III: Lisa Garnier
Students are doing great!
Foods and Nutrition III: Mrs. Garnier
Last week, we learned about soups, stews, and sauces. We created Rotisserie Chicken Noodle Soup using a mirepoix (finely diced onions, carrots, celery, and garlic cooked in oil or butter) as the base for seasoned chicken broth, along with shredded rotisserie chicken and egg noodles. It’s always a favorite.
Some good soup…
